New Audi A6 to Premiere at Australian International Motor Show

26th August, 2004

Audi is poised to unveil the all new A6 - the car that will catapault the brand into the executive saloon class spotlight - at the 2004 Australian International Motor Show.

The new Audi A6 sets a benchmark in the executive class. Following in the successful footsteps of the new Audi A8, the latest generation Audi A6 will redefine the brand’s credentials in this segment thanks to outstanding driving dynamics, the latest technology and superior levels of comfort.

Audi Australia will also introduce its first TDI model, or turbo direct injection diesel, in this segment at launch.

Whilst pricing and Australian specification are yet to be announced, a combination of powerful turbo diesel (TDI) and petrol engines with up to eight cylinders and 246 kW, as well as front-wheel or quattro permanent all-wheel drive, will set the foundation of the model range for the new A6 sports saloon in Australia.

Local market introduction for the new A6 will commence in October 2004.

Superb design, clear Audi architecture and generous proportions set the A6 apart from its competitors. Measuring 4.92 metres in length, 1.86 metres in width, and 1.46 metres in height, the new Audi A6 is visibly larger and more dynamic than before.

The classic proportions of Audi's sports saloon with its low-slung windows and coupé-like roofline are now elevated to a new level of appeal. The contours of the upward-curved shoulder lines and the powerful, sweeping motion of the dynamic line above the side sills give the entire body of the car a forward-moving, dynamic appearance. The powerfully-rising centre section of the front bonnet is a hint at the muscular performance of the new Audi A6.

Seen from the front, Audi’s dynamic trapezoidal single-frame radiator grille clearly characterises the A6 as a representative of the brand’s latest model generation.

From the interior, the A6 also gives way to a distinct and different design that befits a new model of this significance.

The high and wide centre console, with controls and switches within perfect reach, emphasise the sporting architecture of the interior, and surround the driver as the central player. Teardrop-shaped instrument clusters and a new generation of sports steering wheel are strong indicators of this newest generation of sporting Audi models.

The A6 features both a new six-speed tiptronic transmission with quattro variants and Audi’s seamless multitronic transmission, now with 7 pre-selected ratios, for front-drive models.

Weight reduction, a fast and crisp gearshift, as well as optimised gear strategies ensure the 6-speed tiptronic versions combine the superior comfort of automatic gearshift with the sporting performance so typical of the A6.

After making its debut successfully in the previous generation Audi A6 in the year 2000, Audi's continuously variable multitronic automatic transmission now also offers its superior qualities in the new A6, combining the benefits of a manual gearbox with those of a multi-stage automatic transmission. Fortes typical of multitronic are smooth but very dynamic acceleration as well as convenience in use and the efficient transmission of power.

Torsional stiffness in the new A6 has increased by more than 34 percent. Progress of this kind over the bodyshell of the former model, which had already proved its worth for supreme stiffness, clearly confirms the qualities of the new Audi A6.

These qualities are further borne out in terms of both vibration comfort and driving dynamics. Vibration amplitude has been reduced to a minimum and clearly indicate the body's outstanding stiffness and solidity. From this decisive prerequisite also comes excellent acoustics within the vehicle’s interior.

Like its ‘bigger brother’ the A8, this new A6 takes the lead as the sportiest car in its class. Sports superiority is ensured by features such as speed-related servotronic power steering as standard, supplementing the precise handling of the new A6 by even more sensitive steering precision.

Audi's dynamic suspension also rests on proven sporting technology. The upgraded four-link front suspension so typical of Audi, and the self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension carried over from the Audi A8, make a winning combination which is featured on both the front-wheel-drive and quattro models.

The safety equipment featured as standard in the new-generation A6 is equally impressive. Active safety benefits from the latest generation of ESP including brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD). In a collision the occupants are effectively protected by the robust structure of the body with its specific, pre-determined deformation and the highly stable passenger cell.

Front and side airbags plus rear side airbags, as well as the SIDEGUARD head airbag system, offer a high standard of safety and protection for both driver and passenger.

The two full-size front airbags are activated in two stages as a function of accident severity. Active head restraints at the front, in turn, help to protect the occupant in a collision from behind.
