Strong performance, superb dynamics, elegant, yet understated design and everyday practicality are the hallmarks of Audi’s newest S models, which have just been launched in Australia.

An all-new V8 engine, the 4.0 TFSI, provides a hefty 309 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque to these superb top-of-the-range vehicles, yet thanks to its cylinder-on-demand system, which switches off four of the eight cylinders under lighter engine loads, is a significant contributor to efficient driving. The S6 and S7 Sportback deliver a fuel consumption reading of just 9.6 l/100 km.

The all-new S6 sedan continues the legacy of its mighty V10-powered forebearer, however it is now powered by a brand new 4.0 TFSI biturbo V8 engine. Delivering 309 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque, the new sedan is the fastest S6 ever made by Audi, reaching 100 km/h from standstill in just 4.6 seconds. The top speed of the S6 sedan is limited to 250 km/h. The new Audi S6 has an MLP* of $168,900*.

The first-ever S7 Sportback model to be launched shares the same drivetrain as the S6 sedan, and reaches 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. Its top speed is also limited to 250 km/h. It is priced at $179,900* (MLP).

Both of these highly attractive, potent sports cars will be offered in Australia as limited edition models. It is envisaged that just 50 of each model will be available to Australian customers. Both vehicles offer a very high level of standard specification.

For both models, power is transferred to all four wheels via the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission, and quattro drivetrain technology. The S6 limited edition models also include the quattro sports differential as standard, which can distribute almost all of the available engine torque to the rear wheel that requires it most, to ensure exceptional dynamics are always available to the driver.

Despite this incredible performance, the S6 sedan and S7 Sportback employ the very latest measures available from the Audi Modular Efficiency Platform to ensure fuel consumption is class-leading. Start-stop technology rests the engine when the vehicle is stationary to save fuel, while a variety of exotic metals are used in the engine’s construction to ensure friction remains very low. An innovative thermal management system is able to heat up or cool down the engine very quickly as required, to ensure that the engine is always operating at its optimum, and in turn drives down fuel consumption and emissions.

A ground-breaking new technology used by Audi in the all-new 4.0 TFSI biturbo V8 engine is its cylinder-on-demand (CoD) system, which switches off four of the eight cylinders in many driving situations, contributing significantly to the overall efficiency. As a result, the S6 sedan and the S7 Sportback consume just 9.6 litres per 100 km.

To counter any unwanted acoustics that CoD may encourage, two innovative solutions have been found. Active engine mounts offset second-order engine vibrations which occur in four-cylinder mode by generating phase-shifted counter-vibrations. Whenever the new Active Noise Control (ANC) system recognises unwanted noises through tiny microphones hidden in the vehicle’s headlining, it emits a precisely modulated cancellation sound via the sound system’s loudspeakers. It counteracts the noise so effectively that passengers will not hear it and works even when the sound system’s volume is low, muted or switched off.

Standard specification highlights of these high-performance thoroughbreds include:

  • 20-inch 5-parallel-spoke S design alloy wheels
  • Adaptive air suspension (Sport)
  • Digital TV reception
  • Electric boot open and closing function
  • Head-up display (HUD)
  • LED headlights with high-beam assist
  • quattro sports differential
  • S Sport front seats upholstered in Valcona leather
