14th December, 2014

With the local launch of the new front-wheel drive BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, BMW has entered another model into the premium compact class.

Using an entirely new architecture designed to maximise interior space in a compact package which is also used by the Mini brand, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a new vehicle for the brand that may potentially appeal to new BMW customers.

In addition to its functionality, the 2 Series Active Tourer is a true BMW with its inherent performance, efficiency and driving pleasure supplied by a choice of four new generation TwinPower Turbo engines and a chassis design that delivers an engaging driving experience.

With a body measuring 4,342mm in length, 1,800mm in width and 1,555mm in height, the 2 Series Active Tourer is at home in an urban environment while maintaining a distinctive aesthetic that stands out from the crowd.

The exterior design combines trademark BMW styling cues – the slightly forward slanting wide kidney grille, twin circular headlights, short front and rear overhangs and L-shaped tail lights – which, together with a sculpted bonnet, crisp contours and high tapering roofline that finishes in a neatly integrated hatch top spoiler, help to make a car with a particularly dynamic road presence.

Further design distinction for both the exterior and interior is offered with Sport Line - standard on 218i, 218d and 220i models - and Luxury Line (standard on 225i) trim and highlight packages.

Inside, the contemporary design theme continues with the broad layered styling of the instrument panel and door panels, large glass areas, and elevated seating providing a light, airy and spacious feel.

That space is no illusion either with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer providing room for five occupants with comfortable and supportive Sports Seats in the front and a versatile 40/20/40-split fold rear seatback.

The rear seat offers outstanding flexibility with a backrest that can be angled in three different positions – Normal, Comfort or Cargo – or folded fully flat according to passenger and luggage demands. In addition to this, the 60/40-split seat base is able to slide fore and aft through 130mm, providing either greater rear legroom or increased luggage space, depending on the need.

With a low loading height and wide electrically-operated, automatically opening and closing tailgate as standard, access into the large 468-litre load space is easy. With the rear seats folded flat, luggage capacity can be increased to 1,510 litres.

The all new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is very well equipped for comfort and convenience with standard features including climate control, cruise control with braking function, Sensatec upholstery, multi-function sport leather steering wheel, keyless ignition, Rain Sensor automatic windscreen wipers and lights, electric windows and mirrors, and front and rear Park Distance Control.

Infotainment is provided by a six-speaker AM/FM radio CD audio system with USB and AUX inputs, Navigation system, and convenience telephony with extended Bluetooth functions including Voice Control, audio streaming and pairing of multiple devices. All essential vehicle, communication, entertainment and navigation information is displayed on a freestanding 6.5-inch screen in the centre of the instrument panel with functions controlled via the iDrive Controller on the centre console.

The range-topping 225i Active Tourer also gains Dakota leather upholstery, LED headlights, exterior mirrors with automatic parking and electric fold functions, and an LED ambient light package.

All models of the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer feature a comprehensive list of standard safety equipment that includes six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control and a range of BMW ConnectedDrive safety and driver assistance features.

These BMW ConnectedDrive features include an automatic Parking Assistant; Rear View Camera; Driving Assistant with Lane Departure Warning and Pedestrian and Collision Warnings with light city braking function; and Intelligent Emergency Call for automatic rapid response to accidents courtesy of the built-in SIM card.

The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is available with four latest generation powerful and efficient BMW TwinPower Turbo powertrain options. These all feature the latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies including Auto Start/Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, and ECO PRO mode for the Driving Experience Control.

Under the bonnet of the 218i Active Tourer driving through a six-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission is BMW’s first ever three-cylinder engine. Balancing performance and efficiency, the BMW TwinPower Turbo  1.5-litre petrol engine offers maximum outputs of 100kW and 220Nm with an EU combined test fuel consumption rating of 5.2l/100km and CO2 emissions of 122g/km.

For even greater efficiency, the 218d Active Tourer is powered by a BMW TwinPower Turbo 110kW/330Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that drives through an eight-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission and returns a low 4.2l/100km consumption rating with CO2 emissions of 111g/km on the EU test cycle.

The responsive 220i Active Tourer is powered by a 141kW/280Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with TwinPower Turbo technology that drives through an eight-speed Steptronic Automatic transmission and returns a 5.9l/100km fuel consumption rating with CO2 emissions of 138g/km on the EU test cycle.

As the sportiest model in the range, able to cover 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds, the 225i Active Tourer features a 170kW/350Nm, TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine matched to an eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission.

With its long 2,670mm wheelbase, Servotronic electric rack & pinion steering and lightweight single-joint spring-strut front and multi-link rear suspension, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been finely tuned for an optimal balance of sublime ride comfort and sporty driving dynamics.

Drivers are also able to select SPORT, COMFORT or ECO PRO modes through the Driving Experience Control to adjust throttle, transmission and steering responses according to their desired preference.
