BMW Plant Leipzig Celebrates the 250,000th Vehicle

The BMW plant Leipzig has celebrated the 250,000th vehicle to roll off the assembly line since production started in 2003. Additionally, BMW announced plans to add the BMW 1 Series Coupé to its production line.

The celebrated vehicle is a three-door BMW 118d in Alpine White destined for a customer in Austria.

The new BMW 1 Series Coupé will be the third vehicle to be produced at the Leipzig plant joining the BMW 3 Series Sedan and the three-door BMW 1 Series hatchback. Like the 1 Series three-door model, the 1 Series Coupé will be produced for the global market.

All three models will be manufactured on the same lines – body fabrication, paint shop facility and assembly. Component production in the body shop is the only area where parts for the three models are produced at dedicated sites.

The BMW plant Leipzig currently manufactures between 650 and 700 vehicles a day depending on demand. This is achieved through flexible working time and shift systems. More than 5,200 people are currently working at the site of the BMW plant Leipzig. They are employed by BMW, suppliers and partners, with around 2,500 currently working directly for BMW.

History
On 1st March 2005, the BMW plant Leipzig started volume production of the BMW 3 Series Sedan. On 16th June 2006, the 100,000th vehicle was manufactured. On 5th March 2007, integration of a second model commenced with the launch of volume production for the three-door hatchback version of the BMW 1 Series.
