BMW Convertible For The Little Ones

by Stephen Walker

28th October, 2007

BMW 3 pedal car

This is the only BMW convertible (see image) that is worthy of my appreciation. And that is because the new BMW 3 Series convertible has not scored well in crash testing conducted, earlier this year, by America's Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). See our story on this subject here.

Although the real BMW 3 series convertible scored a "good" rating in frontal offset tests, it only rated "marginal" for side impact protection. Worst still, it rated a staggering "poor" during rear-end crashes.

Such a score is even worse when you consider a Saab 9-3 convertible was rated by the IIHS as good in all three tests. So Saab got it right and BMW got it wrong. We're asking why! This is a classic case of back to the drawing board for BMW who now have a big cloud over their safety reputation.

However, a toy BMW convertible pedal car is now available locally. It is recommended for those between three and five years of age. Presumably, it has passed all relevant safety tests.

The price is $399 (RRP). There are no on-road costs associated with this form of motoring!

Safety is important. As such, little ones should be supervised when 'motoring' in their new BMW.
