The all new BMW 7 Series range will arrive in Australian dealerships in April 2009, powered by the 240 kW 3.0 litre
twin turbo straight six and new twin turbo 300 kW V8 BMW EfficientDynamics engines.
Just eight weeks later, the 180 kW 3.0-litre straight six turbo-diesel powered 730d will arrive, completing the
line-up for 2009.
This fifth generation BMW 7 Series will be available in extended wheelbase guise in both petrol models from launch,
the 740Li and 750Li rear passengers enjoying the luxury of a 140 mm longer wheelbase, giving 208 mm of rear legroom.
These models also benefit from a revised roofline delivering an additional 10 mm in rear headroom (988 mm) and also a
unique sweep to the C-pillar.
The BMW 730d is available as a standard wheelbase model only.

For many BMW 7 Series customers the performance of the straight-six or V8 engines will be the prime attraction,
coupled with the driving experience.
The new twin turbo V8 engine delivers performance akin to a V12 engine, but with the fuel economy of some six or
Thanks to 300 kW of power, available between 5,500 – 6,400 rpm and maximum torque of 600 Nm available across an
enduring plateau extending from 1,750 - 4,500 rpm, the V8 flagship model delivers seamless performance.
The BMW 750i accelerates from 0-100 km/h in an unfussed manner, taking 5.2 seconds. It consumes only 11.4 litres
of petrol per 100 km on the European combined cycle. Despite being 30 kW more powerful than its predecessor, the V8
engine is actually two per cent more frugal as well. This engine emits some 266 g/km of CO2.
The twin turbo, High Precision Injection 3.0-litre now delivers 240 kW at 5,800 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between
1,500 – 4,500 rpm. It is 15 kW more powerful than its predecessor and uses 12 per cent less fuel.
This engine accelerates the BMW 740i from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and consumes 9.9-l/100 km of fuel on the
European combined cycle, while emitting 232 g/km of CO2.
The newest addition to the 7 Series model line-up, the BMW 730d Sedan is the first 7 Series to be offered with
diesel power in Australia. In Europe, the predecessor 730d model was the biggest seller, underlining its appeal with
For Australia, the 730d uses the new generation diesel also fitted to the new 330d Sedan. It is a straight six
featuring an aluminium block, third generation common rail direct injection with piezo injectors, and a maximum
injection pressure of 1,800 bar. The turbo charger has variable turbo geometry and a diesel particle filter and an
oxidation catalyst are fitted as standard.
The 730d engine generates 180 kW of power at 4,000 rpm and 540 Nm of torque between 1,750 - 3,000 rpm. As a result,
the BMW 730d accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, and uses 7.2 l/100km of fuel, emitting 192 g/km of CO2.
This engine is 10 kW more powerful, 5 kg lighter and uses 10 per cent less diesel than its predecessor.
All models are matched to a six-speed automatic transmission equipped with optimised gearshift dynamics for faster
shifting, improved shift comfort, reduced fuel consumption, and are controlled via the electronic gear selector.
In order to contribute fully to the concept of BMW EfficientDynamics, the new BMW 7 Series has been weight
optimised by the use of high and ultra-high strength steel and heat-formed steel profiles in the body structure.
Load bearing body components are steel, while the roof, doors, bonnet and side panels are made of aluminium. The
alloy roof alone saves 7 kg, and the doors save 22 kg.
The aluminium pressure-cast suspension supports at the front, and a final drive with an aluminium housing all
work towards keeping overall weight as low as possible. The three engines are made from light weight aluminium.
The BMW 7 Series is renowned for its dynamic on-road performance, and the new car will offer even greater
enjoyment behind the wheel for the sporting driver.
The all new suspension optimises ride and handling with a particular accent on comfort. The new BMW 7 Series is
the first BMW Sedan with a double-wishbone front axle and the exclusive BMW integral V rear axle. The front and rear
axles are made largely of aluminium, while air suspension with self levelling at the rear is standard on the
extended wheelbase models.
Hydraulic rack and pinion steering with an on-demand steering assistance pump joins the world debut of optional
Integral Active Steering, a combination of Active Steering on the front axle and speed-related rear-wheel steering.
Extending the performance envelope are new driver assistance features such as Dynamic Damping Control including
Dynamic Driving Control which are standard.
The dampers, gearshift dynamics, as well as the throttle and steering assistance map are varied by the Dynamic
Driving Control button on the centre console. This offers the choice of COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT and SPORT PLUS settings.
Dynamic Damping Control allows infinitely variable control of the damping effort for compression and rebound, across
all settings, enabling the BMW 7 Series occupant to be perfectly insulated from road harshness or uneven surfaces. This
allows a truly unique combination of firm suspension setup on the one hand, and a comfortable response to bumps on the
other, and becomes the benchmark in suspension ride and comfort in this class.
A special traction mode and SPORTS+ setting with reduced or deactivated DSC control is available for drivers wishing
to experience a particularly sporting style of motoring.
The V8 models are fitted with Dynamic Drive (optionally available for 730d, 740i, 740Li), which reduces vehicle roll
caused by centrifugal forces when cornering. This means the driver enjoys greater responsiveness at all speeds, with
neutral steering and smoother weight transfer.
In Australia, customers are offered the following features as standard on all models: Head-Up Display, High Beam
Assistant, Adaptive bi-Xenon headlights with daytime running function, variable headlight beam distribution for better
illumination around bends, including automatic turning lights, Automatic Variable Light technology (beam throw control
with country/highway lights), Rear View Camera, and Cruise Control with Brake function.
In addition the following features may be optionally specified: BMW Night Vision with pedestrian detection (standard
on V8 models), Side View cameras (standard on 740Li and V8 models), Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Departure
Warning (including speed limit indicator available at a later stage), and Lane Change Warning.
Maximum occupant protection is ensured by the optimised body structure working in conjunction with comprehensive,
interacting and electronically controlled passive safety systems, three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all seats,
side airbags and side head airbags, crash-activated head restraints at the front, runflat tyres, a tyre defect indicator
and two-stage brake lights are standard.
The new BMW 7 Series Interior
The interior of the new BMW 7 Series Sedan offers the latest rendition of typical BMW luxury, enhanced further with a
new arrangement of functions that brings driver oriented controls close to hand, and locates driver and passenger shared
function controls in the centre of the dashboard area.
The interior ambience is exclusive and sophisticated, with gently curving surfaces covered in high-quality materials
that leave an incredibly luxurious impression.
2009 BMW 7 Series
The driver-oriented cockpit with its innovative Black Panel technology display is complemented by the electronic
selector for the automatic transmission located close at hand on the centre console, next to the Dynamic Driving Control
unit and new BMW iDrive controller.
The concept of the multi-function steering wheel was pioneered by the BMW 7 Series more than 14 years ago, and is
further updated for the new generation 7 Series. An extended range of functions can be controlled through the buttons,
giving the driver intuitive control over primary functions that require attention while driving.
For the new BMW 7 Series, the revised and enhanced iDrive control system is coupled to a new, larger, 10.2 inch
display boasting high-resolution graphics and a new optimised vertical menu structure.
The new iDrive Controller is complemented by direct selection buttons and, for the first time, freely programmable
favourite buttons for even more intuitive control and operation. The direct selection buttons are grouped around the
Controller and each has a different surface contour, to allow for tactile selection when driving. The buttons give
access to CD selection, Radio, Telephone and Navigation Functions, as well as three command buttons: MENU, BACK and
Now slightly smaller in diameter, the iDrive Controller rests even better in the driver’s palm. It is easier to turn,
and thus allows faster selection of menu options. No longer is the Controller pushed parallel to the surface as before.
Now it is turned around a centre-point, like a joystick. This allows even simpler and more ergonomic operation.
The multifunction steering wheel allows the driver to control the most important audio and telephone functions
without taking his hands off the steering wheel or eyes off the road.
As on many BMW models, the centre console is angled towards the driver, while all displays and controls are laid out
following a simple principle – driving-related functions are on the driver’s door side, and comfort features placed
conveniently between the driver and passenger.
Top-quality materials combined with outstanding build quality and presented in an elegant package blessed with
supreme functionality and attention to the finest detail mark the interior of the new BMW 7 Series.
The use of ceramic finishing touches (optional) for the iDrive controller, gear selector lever and automatic
climate control buttons is another first in a production car.
A wide range of comfort functions and innovative entertainment options include an audio system with a hard disc
memory, while an AUX and USB-in slot is featured as standard. All new BMW 7 Series Sedans delivered in Australia
will feature the following equipment as standard: Active front seat ventilation, four zone automatic climate control
air conditioning, Comfort Access, soft close doors and boot, interactive Owner’s Handbook, Navigation Professional
with three-dimensional map views, high resolution full colour 10.2-inch screen, TV receiver, Voice Recognition, a
6-stacker DVD changer, and 12-speaker HiFi audio.
All models are upholstered in BMW Dakota leather. The upholstery may be ordered in Everest Grey, Veneto Beige,
Oyster/Oyster, Oyster/Black, Saddle Brown Light, Black or Barrique Red. The standard interior trim finish is
Fine-wood trim Fineline in high-gloss, or, at no additional cost, Fine-wood trim Fineline natural, Fine-wood trim
Ash Grain in high-gloss, Fine-wood trim Ash Grain anthracite, or aluminium Finely Brushed Lengthwise.
The new BMW 7 Series Sedan colour chart comprises non-metallic Alpine White and Black, and ten metallic colours,
all available at no additional cost. These are: Titanium Silver, Black Sapphire, Space Grey, Imperial Blue
(brilliant effect), Sophisto Grey (brilliant effect), Cashmere Silver, Deep Green, Deep Sea Blue, Milano Beige and
Mineral White. Brilliant effect paint finishes generate a fascinating, consistently changing interplay of colours
under direct light.
Further interior exclusivity is available for customers to select via the “Nappa” leather upholstery option,
available in Black, Oyster/Oyster, or Oyster/Black. This extends the use of leather covering to the instrument
The extended wheelbase versions set new standards of rear-seat comfort, both because of their enormously generous
leg and headroom, and because of the wide range of attractive communication, entertainment, climate control and seat
comfort features and options.
All extended wheelbase models come with a rear climate control package which allows each of two zones to be
independently controlled in the rear.
The standard audio package in the V8 models includes a 600 Watt, 16-speaker system for a true three-dimensional
The 750Li features rear Comfort seats (optional on other models) with the option of massage and ventilation
functions. Head restraints, backrest angle and seat cushion position are all individually adjustable.
The rear-seat entertainment Professional fitted as standard to the V8 models, and optional on others, includes
9.2 inch monitors built into the backs of the front seats and a DVD player. The Professional rear-seat entertainment
system also comes with a second iDrive Controller to select entertainment programmes and operate the separate
navigation system in the rear.
The standard seating arrangement in the 750Li is a two person Comfort Seats set-up and rear ventilation package.
This may be switched to a regular three seat bench at the time of ordering.
The new BMW 7 Series Driver Assistance features
iDrive: The Next Generation
The new BMW 7 Series introduces the next generation of BMW’s trendsetting iDrive control system. A newly developed
Controller with direct access buttons and a 10.2-inch high resolution Control Display facilitate intuitive management,
control and activation of the vehicle’s infotainment and comfort functions.
The new standardised menu structure and visual prompts allow the occupants to get to grips with the new structure
The direct access and favourite buttons make selection of many features a single press action.
The new iDrive control system offers full-screen mode for viewing maps including three-dimensional relief maps.
The system is equipped with an 80 Gb hard drive which allows storage of up to 8 Gb of audio files from a CD or USB
This hard drive arrangement allows faster route planning, simplified voice input well as a more extensive range of
Head Up Display with Night Vision and Pedestrian Recognition
BMW is the world’s first car manufacturer to offer Night Vision with pedestrian recognition and a warning system in
the new 7 Series. This is standard on the V8 models and available optionally on others.
The system employs a thermal imaging camera providing a moving video picture in which the driver is able to detect
pedestrians, animals and other objects not illuminated by the headlights. This image is displayed in high-resolution
on the central Control Display.
The new generation BMW Night Vision now detects individuals, giving the driver an additional warning in the Control
Display or the Head Up Display whenever the detected people or animals are considered to be in an at risk situation.
BMW Head Up Display is featured as standard on all new 7 Series models.
Lane Change Warning
Lane Change Warning, available as an option for the first time in a BMW, enables the driver to overtake in greater
safety. Radar sensors at the rear of the vehicle monitor traffic conditions in the adjacent lanes, covering an area
extended to a distance of 60 metres behind the car. A triangle symbol is illuminated permanently on the base of the
exterior mirror showing the driver that there is another vehicle in the critical range.
When the driver indicates an up-coming lane change, the LED signal in the mirror will begin to flash, providing a
clear warning. A discreet vibration of the steering wheel also cautions the driver against making the manoeuvre. The
system operates only above 60 km/h.
Lane Departure Warning
Also available as an option on the new BMW 7 Series, Lane Departure Warning detects any unintentional drifting off
course, perhaps occurring when a driver is fatigued. Lane Departure Warning comprises a camera installed near the rear
view mirror, a control unit for the comparison of data and a signal generator which vibrates the steering wheel.
The camera scans the road markings on at least one side of the car, as well as the edge of the each lane and the
distance from the car. This system is able to look 50 metres ahead (and may also be used at night), and only operates
above 70 km/h.
A note on Speed Limit Detection
The Speed Limit detection function is for information purposes only. It works by using the Lane Departure Warning
camera to scan the roadside for speed limit warning signs and relay these on the Head Up Display for the driver’s
information. It is also linked to the rain sensor, so is sensitive enough to warn drivers in the event of reduced wet
weather speed limits.
The BMW philosophy is not to impose decisions on the driver, but rather to inform him/her and allow him/her to make
their own decisions, and does not remove any responsibility from the driver to adhere to road rules or drive safely.
In Australia, BMW is currently investigating the feasibility of introducing this system, and an announcement will
be forthcoming in due course.
Reversing and side vision
The new BMW 7 Series features as standard Park Distance Control front and rear and includes a rear view camera. A
supplementary feature is the Side View camera (standard on V8 models and the 740Li) which uses two cameras integrated
into the front wheel arches. Thus the driver may monitor crosswise traffic sooner, for example when edging out of a
driveway, or when parking in confined spaces. The images appear in the central Control Display.
On board, personalised electronic Owner’s Handbook
Another world first, the BMW 7 Series owner has all the information usually found in a printed handbook stored
electronically in their car, uniquely structured to reflect exactly the features and specifications of their vehicle.
Access is via the iDrive Controller. Information and instructions are presented clearly and easily-to-understand
animations are backed up by audio information and by slide shows.

Integral Active Steering (optional)
Active Steering at the front reduces the effort involved in steering the car, while rear wheels that turn with the
car make the new BMW 7 Series uniquely manoeuvrable. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to
the front ones (a maximum of three degrees), making the car noticeably easier to manage in tight spaces by reducing
the turning circle by 70 cm, while at speeds in excess of 80 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the
front ones. As a result, lateral forces in manoeuvres such as fast lane changes are significantly reduced, so that
passengers are more comfortable and the car feels as if it is driving on invisible rails. This combination of
technologies is a world first.
BMW EfficientDynamics on the new BMW 7 Series delivers the most advanced power units with combustion processes
optimised for maximum efficiency, transmissions enhanced for maximum economy, intelligent energy management through
Brake Energy Regeneration and the on-demand control of the car’s ancillaries, consistent lightweight engineering and
Brake Energy Regeneration
This new system manages the flow of energy in the vehicle. The moment the driver lifts off the accelerator or
applies the brake pedal, kinetic energy from the wheels is captured and fed to the battery. This reduces the amount
of power the battery draws from the engine and hence lowers fuel consumption. Under acceleration, the alternator is
decoupled from the drivetrain. With fewer components drawing power from the drivetrain, more of the engine's output
can go into acceleration.
