Two Jeeps and an Australian Dream

Jeep Grand Cherokee

28th June, 2004

Award winning travel authors and film producers Brian and Joy Grant are teaming up with Jeep to record a travelogue on outback travel which will be used to produce a television documentary aiming to inspire ‘wannabe’ outback adventurers.

In the first week of July this year, a party of six people will depart Adelaide and embark on a five-week Australian outback adventure in two of the Jeep brand’s flagship Grand Cherokees - one towing a new Jayco Outback Expanda and the other a Jayco Camper Trailer.

The Grants will be there all the way to bring the adventure to life on camera, capturing the travellers’ pleasures, surprises and hardships as they make their way along what is known to Central Australian Tourism as the Inland Loop. The 4000km journey will see the party visit a wide range of locations including the Flinders Ranges, Simpson Desert, Birdsville, Gibber Desert, Dalhousie Springs and Lake Eyre.

The Grants noted that there are many Australians who dream of travelling in the outback, but many never get around to it because they either don’t know how to go about it or they just don’t think they are capable.

“The aim of this documentary is to inspire wannabes outback travellers, helping them understand the planning required, some of the challenges they will face and whet their appetite with a taste of the amazing rewards that are out there. Ultimately we want people to understand that with planning, outback travel is possible and there is a beautiful country waiting to be seen,” said Brian.

Brad Fitzsimmons, National Sales Manager, Chrysler Jeep Australia, said "Chrysler Jeep is proud to assist in promoting the Australian outback and the 4WD and camper way of travelling. The Caravan, Camping and Motor Home Industry is Australia’s fastest growing tourism sector, and our vehicles are perfectly suited for the often harsh and heavy towing required.”

"Over the last 60 years Jeep has built a reputation for delivering rugged, versatile vehicles with real four-wheel-drive power. The on-road refinement of our vehicles is proven in most owners everyday lives. Adventures like this provide the perfect opportunity for owners to experience and test the legendary Jeep 4x4 capabilities and in doing so see some amazing countryside they otherwise wouldn’t experience."

Brian and Joy Grant, who have been producing travelogues for over 14 years, said, “Freedom and capability to go anywhere have always been hallmarks of the Jeep brand, so we approached Jeep to partner us with this documentary. We knew their vehicles were up to the challenge and perform well both in and around cities and off-road. The 2.7 L Turbo Diesel Laredo models we will be using are also perfect for towing.”

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a unique combination of ruggedness, capability, on-road refinement and a powerful engine with ample low-end torque which makes for an easy going and comfortable trip with the grunt to do the towing work.

Jeep year to date June sales in Australia are up 27% compared to the same time last year.
