Mahindra For Australia

27th November, 2006

Mahindra Scopio

TMI Pacific Pty Ltd is a newly formed company that will import and distribute Mahindra motor vehicles from early 2007.

The company is part of the Tynan Motor Group and is based in Sydney (NSW).

Michael Tynan started in business with a jewellery shop in Kogarah (NSW) but he was also keenly involved in rallying. During his ten years of rallying, he was noticed by Mazda in Japan, who very soon had him into their cars. Within three months, he was offered the Mazda franchise for the Sutherland Shire, which was to be their first dealership in Australia!

So it was November 1966 when Michael Tynan started Tynan Motors in a service station in Sutherland (NSW).

The Tynan Motors Group is still a family company, into its third generation of family involvement. It is rated 74th in BRW Magazine Top 500 Family Companies. The company employs well over 400 staff at six locations including multi-franchise dealerships, service centres and a tyre centre.

Today the group retails 10 automotive brands; Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Suzuki.

Mahindra Pikup

"Although prices are yet to be set, we know we have to catch people's attention with sharp pricing, to set a strong base for Mahindra in Australia. We can't match the big, established outfits in advertising and marketing budgets, so our vehicles and pricing will have to speak for themselves” said Michael Tynan.

"The Mahindra Pik-up is just the first of what can soon build into an interesting range of vehicles."

Mahindra and Mahindra was been involved in manufacturing for 60 years. The company has extensive business interests in India. Other automotive products include tractors and an SUV, the Mahindra Scorpio. In co-operation with Renault, Mahindra produce the little "Logan" in India. This basic car is manufactured in various locations around the world. It is Renault's expression of an entry level light car for developing markets (such as Eastern Europe, South America and India). If it were to come to Australia from India, it will have the potential to be Australia's cheapest new 4-door sedan.
