21st November, 2005
Forty years ago this month, Volvo started producing cars in
Ghent, Belgium – its first factory outside Sweden.
Prince Bertil of Sweden opened Volvo's Ghent plant in
November 1965, and in the 40 years since it has produced more than three million
cars and grown into one of Volvo Cars’ two main assembly plants¹ (alongside its
Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden).
Initially, painted bodies were shipped to Ghent from
Gothenburg, but in 1972 the plant became a complete car manufacturing plant with
the addition of a body shop and a paint shop.
Today, some 5,200 Volvo employees in Ghent build the latest S40
saloon, V50 sportswagon, S60 saloon and V70 estate models, and in the past have
also produced such Volvo classics as: the 120, 140, 240, 760, 740, 850, S70, and
the previous V70.
In 2004, Volvo manufactured a total of 466,036 cars, of which 246,078 were from
the Ghent plant.
