NEXT CAR'S NEWSLETTER
28th APRIL, 2006

WELCOME
to our newsletter #63

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

Friends,

Dodgy financial payments made by Hyundai, big-time asset sales by General Motors, dodgy lawyers being sued by DaimlerChrysler, alleged patent mis-use by Toyota all reveal there is plenty of news around. But these instances and others do not relate to the products which car enthusiasts enjoy reading about. We live in a troubled world and it seems in some quarters that 'anything goes' is the preferred catch-cry. Fortunately, there is plenty of good news on the many new models which are coming on to the world car market. Don't expect any let-up on new model releases. There are many new models scheduled for release in the next year. And after that .... there will be many more!

Warm regards,
Stephen Walker

Mitsubishi 380 LX
road test

The comfort and driving manners make the 380 a desirable package. It rates as equal best in its class as far as driving and comfort goes. Considering that the styling of the Commodore is now looking a little stale, then its easy to see that, in fact, it is the 380 that would get the nod if I were putting my money on the line!

The Editor's Pick Of The News

After reading the news, which story did you enjoy the most?

With so much good news around, there is a wide selection of worthy contenders for my pick of the news. For example .... Audi's success with the diesel R10 racer will assist in lifting the profile of diesel power .... Volkswagen's local release of both the Jetta and Passat is good news for the market .... Ford's new 5 cylinder Focus XR5 is bound to interest those who want some flair in their new car .... the diesel engined Nissan Pathfinder Ti will readily find interest in the 4x4 market .... Suzuki's new XL-7 which made its debut at the New York Motor Show .... Cadillac's European release of the Saab built Cadillac BLS has implications for Australia .... the local availability of the highly desirable Peugeot 407 Coupe .... but the best news of all, in my view, is the release of the series 2 version of the Mitsubishi 380. Hopefully, now that the 380 is priced from $27,990 (RRP) people will find a good reason to ignore the, what I see as excessively plain and boring, Toyota Camry. This new price structure and model re-alignment for the excellent 380 range is, clearly, my pick of the news!

LOOKING BACK

BMW 02 series

Originally, it was only an internal designation, but these digits were to become the stuff of legends: 2, later 02. In 1966, they were applied for the first time to the type designation of the new 1600 and were simply meant to identify it as the new two-door from BMW – by contrast to the standard BMW 1600 with four doors. Of course, this designation was only necessary on paper, because the two models were actually quite distinct, even down to the family profile .... more
