Volkswagen Golf GTI
... first drive

This hot hatch is more than hot!

by Stephen Walker

10th May, 2005

Name something more exciting in Canberra than Question Time in the House of Representatives!

That's easy ..... how about a drive of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI in the mountains outside of Canberra.

The Editor is no stranger to Canberra and an opportunity to attend the media launch of Volkswagen's new Golf GTI was a good excuse to return to the nation's capital once again.

Firstly, though, before you read our driving impressions of the new Golf GTI you may care to read our story on the new car, from 9th May, 2005 here. There is a good background on the fifth generation Golf GTI in this article.

To begin the day, after arrival at Canberra's airport, a fleet of Golf GTIs hit the road, just as soon as the assembled media could get their seat belts buckled. The first task was to clock up 130 kms around the city and out to Cotter Dam and onto Uriara Crossing. Then it was down past Tidbinbilla Deep Space Tracking Station and over to Tuggeranong via the scenic route. After the delights of this drive it was then time to assemble at a driving range north of Queanbeyan.

The drive in the Tidbinbilla Range proved one thing and it proved it quite decisively. And that is that the new Golf GTI is one mighty fine driving machine. The particular course which we followed demonstrated that the GTI has excellent handling, superb steering and a sporty nature which is bound to thrill when the need arises. Those who know the Tidbinbilla Range in the Australian Capital Territory will recall it is paved with winding roads which in some stages can be somewhat mountainous. And nearer to the flood plains the roads can be undulating, sweeping and/or long and straight. There are many contrasts in this area.

The driving dynamics of this car make it an easy car to live with on a daily basis, even as a daily commuter car. But the throttle can be exercised at will and thus changes the car to one of the most delightful packages you could ever imagine. The acceleration is good, so too is the braking. But best of all, the traction provided by the front wheel drive is impressive. Even though this car is relatively powerful, I found no evidence of torque-steer despite being behind the wheel of several GTIs for two hours or more.

On this day, most of my travels in the GTI was in a manual version. And what a delight it was! But the automatic (DSG) is my favourite. It is both a manual and an automatic. Therefore you can use it as an automatic for the traditional daily commutes, then as a manual when there is a reason for a thrill. What a car, two superb choices and both are as effective as each other!

The media contingent gave the Golf GTI a thorough testing. The ESP was demonstrated and tested on the skidpan. The cars were tested at speed for handling and braking on a closed, controlled private road. This editor heard not one complaint all day. Such were the experiences of an assembled group of car enthusiasts who masquerade as motoring journalists!

Behind the wheel, we found the driving position to be quite comfortable and all the controls easily accessible.

But really, one needs to be picky where one can. But this is a problem area. There is nothing which didn't impress me with this new model car. It is an excellent performer and I can make no suggestion for any improvement.

We'll have a full road test of the new Golf GTI next month when we have yet another go at this impressive car. You can be sure we're looking forward to it too! After the best part of a day with numerous examples of the new car, that's both manual and DSG versions, I'm one who will readily volunteer for another go!
