Mitsubishi Magna
The new TL series

The new TL series Magna is now joined by the all-wheel drive versions. The new range covers a multitude of versions. Let's cover that first. Sedans are available in ES, LS, VR and VR-X two-wheel drive models, whilst all-wheel drive versions have model designations as AWD and VR AWD. The ES and LS sedans, by the way, can be supplied by the factory to run on lpg. There's 3 wagons available, too. The wagons are LS, ES and VR. There's no all-wheel drive wagons as yet. Beyond Magna, there's Verada, but we'll look at Verada another time. For the moment, we're just looking at Magna.

All told, there's over 250 changes from the TJ series to the new TL series. The most obvious being the front-end styling, which features new headlamp treatment and Mitsubishi's new "global styling" which you may have noticed is now included on the latest CH Lancer models.

Power is from the familiar 3.5 litre, 24-valve, single overhead cam, V6 which provides 155 k/W of power (at 5250 rpm) in the ES and LS models (143 on lpg versions), whilst the VR and VR-X have 163 k/W from a slightly more fiery version. The AWD has 154 k/W and the VR AWD has 159 k/W. Brakes are discs all-round, on all models. The AWD models have premium Ralliart brakes.

Drivetrain choices remain unchanged, although a more sporty feel has been achieved by revising the spring and damper rates. A rear stabiliser bar is now fitted to all sedans. The two all-wheel drive models feature a five-speed sequential shifting automatic transmission, which is thoroughly delightful to use. This transmission is optional on the 2-wheel drive VR and VR-X models. Other models have a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, depending on which model is chosen.

There's 3 new colour choices amongst the 12 colours on offer.

Equipment levels are a good feature of the Magna range. All models have air bags for front occupants, including side air bags. All models feature a trip computer, automatic climate control air conditioning with rear outlets included, power antenna, power windows all-round, cruise control, door mirrors are electronically controlled, central door locking and power-operated driver's seat. There's alloy wheels on all but the ES, which has full wheel covers.

The Magna is a well balanced car, which provides good comfort and a smooth ride. The all-wheel drive versions, in particular, provide a wonderful driving experience. The TL series updates an already fine product, which will see the model through to a major new model introduction in time.
