Road Test

Holden Caprice (WL)

Life was meant to be easy after all!

The new model Statesman and Caprice will be arriving in showrooms this month. In the meantime, we recall our time with the outgoing WL series Caprice.

But, firstly, you may be curious about the new WM series. Yes, we have had a look! And it sure does look good! The sloping roof line makes the new model look very dashing! We expect there will be many execs lining up for delivery once they have had an opportunity to see it 'live'.

An amazing aspect with the large Holden is the fact that more are sold overseas than are sold locally. This is a good thing because without the additional export sales, there would be insufficient demand to make these larger models at a reasonable price. Thus exporting has been and will remain important to the on-going success of the Statesman and Caprice.

When behind the wheel, it is quite apparent that the Caprice has appeal. Sure it looks big and cumbersome. But it is so gentle to drive and it has such roominess that the comfort level provides such a peaceful atmosphere that driving this big car is a pleasure.

The test car was of the V8 variety. Needless to say, power was plentiful. Our gentle 756 kms with the car was without stress as we lazily covered territory in suburban Sydney and Newcastle, with a cruise up and down the F3 between the two cities. The combination of the V8 and the automatic transmission makes driving simple. In the right hands, driving a car could not be easier than that offered by the Caprice. Of course, in the wrong hands, the combination of a V8 and inexperience could be a recipe for disaster. Hence, ownership of a V8 requires careful consideration of who should be permitted the option of driving such a car.

But for the experienced driver, the Caprice V8 is so attentive to the driver's commands that driving the big Holden is like having a day dream. It requires no effort at all!

The only problem in driving the big Holden, is an observation we had made in the past. Big cars are not the easiest cars to park in a city environment. When searching for a city parking spot, many cars have a distinct advantage over the Caprice.

Interior comfort is provided by the spacious interior. The leather seating is superb. Enough said!

All controls are easily accessible and all offer uncomplicated operation.

Many people experience the big Holdens as passengers of the public transport sector. Others have corporate transport provided. But aspiring executives and successful business folks should be including the Caprice on their short list for their next vehicle acquisition too. I say that because the Caprice provided us with superb motoring in outstanding comfort with the traditional Holden driving qualities. And being a Holden means uncomplicated serving is available almost anywhere and at a reasonable cost.

Clearly, life was meant to be easy after all.
