  • New BMW 4 Series variant
  • 420i, 420d, 428i and 435i now available

BMW Group Australia has announced the arrival of a new addition to its new 4 Series range – the all-new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.

This new model follows the recent introduction of the Coupé and Convertible versions of the BMW 4 Series, with its added functionality further broadening the appeal of the range.

According to Phil Horton, managing director of BMW Group Australia, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé brings the BMW 4 Series styling and dynamics to a wider audience.

“The Gran Coupé variant adds more functionality to the BMW 4 Series without compromising any of the aesthetics or driving enjoyment of the vehicle”.

“And in line with BMW’s strategic product direction, the additional functionality will not come at a premium. The 4  Series Gran Coupé will be similarly equipped and identically priced to the equivalent two-door Coupé models,” said Horton.

Boasting nearly identical exterior dimensions to its two-door stable mate, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is 4,638 mm in length, 1,825 mm wide and shares the same wheelbase and track of the 4 Series Coupé. The major difference between the Coupé and the Gran Coupé lies in the roofline, which sits 12 mm higher and extends a further 112 mm towards the rear of the car.

The two frameless rear doors of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offer greater access to the 2+1 rear bench seat and the increased height and length of the roof allows for greater rear passenger headroom and improved comfort. Added to this is the 35 litre increase in the luggage compartment, now boasting 480 litres of room – up to 1,300 litres with the standard 40:20:40 split fold rear seats folded down – which provides more convenience for everyday commuting.

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé line-up is identical to the two-door Coupé models which are all powered by the latest BMW TwinPower turbo engines boasting exhilarating power and torque figures. These include:

BMW 4 Series 420i Gran Coupé:

  • Four-cylinder in-line turbocharged with direct injection
  • 135 kW, 270 Nm
  • 0–100 km/h: 7.6 sec
  • EU fuel consumption: 6.1 litres/100 km; CO2 emissions: 142 g/km

BMW 4 Series 420d Gran Coupé:

  • Four-cylinder in-line turbocharged diesel
  • 135 kW, 380 Nm
  • 0–100 km/h: 7.5 sec
  • EU fuel consumption: 4.6 litres/100 km
  • CO2 emissions: 121 g/km

BMW 4 Series 428i Gran Coupé:

  • Four-cylinder in-line turbocharged with direct injection
  • 180 kW, 350 Nm
  • 0–100 km/h: 6.0 sec
  • EU fuel consumption: 6.4 litres/100 km
  • CO2 emissions: 149 g/km

BMW 4 Series 435i Gran Coupé:

  • Six-cylinder in-line turbocharged with direct injection
  • 225 kW, 400 Nm
  • 0–100 km/h: 5.2 sec
  • EU fuel consumption: 7.6 litres/100 km
  • CO2 emissions: 178 g/km

These figures are due, in part, to the inclusion of an eight-speed Sports Automatic transmission as standard fitment for all BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé models.

As well as claiming excellent performance figures, all three models combine ultra-efficient engine and transmission combinations with a suite of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies to achieve exemplary consumption and emissions figures. Each BMW 4 Series Coupé is equipped with Auto Stop/Start, Brake Energy Regeneration, ECO PRO mode and on-demand ancillaries such as electric power steering.

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé shares a high level of standard specification nearly identical to that of the equivalent BMW 4 Series Coupé models.

This means that the 420i and 420d entry level models come equipped as standard with features such as the eight-speed sports automatic transmission which includes gearshift paddles on the steering wheel and launch control function.

The safety credentials are enhanced with a suite of BMW Dynamic Stability Control systems, six airbags including driver and front passenger front and side airbags as well as curtain head airbags for front and rear passengers, active protection which initiates protective measures if an accident situation is imminent and a powerful braking system with front and rear inner vented discs.

For these models driver awareness and visibility is well served by the standard front and rear Park Distance Control (PDC), rear view camera, Bi-Xenon headlights with auto headlight control and rain sensor, as well as an anti-dazzle interior rear view mirror.

The comfort of the occupants is guaranteed, thanks to the two-zone automatic climate control system, heat/sun protection glazing of the windows, full electric sports seats with memory as well as heating function for driver and front passenger and Dakota leather upholstery. A range of versatile storage options throughout the car ensures there is a place for everything - bottle holders in the front door pockets, nets on the front seat backrests as well as an additional versatile storage net. Under the floor of the luggage compartment is a dividable storage tray. With 40:20:40 split fold rear seats providing a flexible through loading system and an automatic tailgate the maximum space for luggage is made available with the greatest of ease.

Accompanying the six-speaker audio system with auxiliary in and USB connection is the convenience telephony with extended smart-phone connectivity which allows extended Bluetooth functionality such as audio streaming and pairing of multiple devices. The value of the 420i and 420d Gran Coupé models is improved with the standard inclusion of the navigation system Professional which includes an iDrive touch controller, a high-res 8.8-inch colour screen and 20Gb hard drive storage for music files.

Stepping up in the range, the 428i Gran Coupé is further enhanced with the addition of anti-dazzle function for interior and exterior mirrors, electric lumbar support for driver and front passenger seats, internet functionality and an upgrade to the nine-speaker HiFi loudspeaker system, as well as the inclusion of the Adaptive M suspension which lowers ride height by 10 mm and provides adaptable damping.

All BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé models (excluding 435i Gran Coupé) also include either ‘Sport Line’, ‘Modern Line’ or ‘Luxury Line’ as standard. All of these standard packages are designed to make a specific character for the car.

The ‘Sport Line’ features specific high-gloss black for the front and rear bumper trims, kidney grille, B-pillar trims and window recess covers with a black chrome trim for the exhaust tip. The interior is also characterised with chrome pearl grey surrounds on air-conditioning and radio controls, sport leather steering wheel with red contrast stitching, high-gloss black interior trim with coral red accent lines and the choice of black leather upholstery with red stitching or coral red upholstery with black stitching. The 420i and 420d models will also receive 18-inch double spoke style alloy wheels with the 428i Gran Coupé getting 19-inch alloy rims in star-spoke styling.

Selecting the ‘Luxury Line’ uses similar trim elements to make an entirely different character. Exclusive chrome trims now feature on the front and rear bumper, kidney grille and exhaust tip, and the Line also offers alternative upholstery colours of saddle brown with extended trim colour, Veneto beige, black or ivory white. Wheel sizes stay the same for the respective models but get a different styling with 18-inch multi-spoke style for the 420i and 420d and 19-inch for the 428i Gran Coupé.

‘Modern Line’ makes further differentiation with 18-inch turbine style for the 420i and 420d variants and 19-inch turbine style for the 428i Gran Coupé and exclusive satinated aluminium trims for the kidney grille, front and rear bumpers, window recess covers and exhaust tip. The Dakota leather upholstery is available in black, oyster with black colour world or oyster with oyster colour world. The interior is trimmed in pearl dark with pearl gloss chrome accent lines with black or oyster for the leather steering wheel.

The range topping 435i Gran Coupé comes further equipped with features that support its high-end positioning within the line-up. The combination of standard Adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering and high performance four-piston fixed calliper brake system on the front substantially enhances the dynamics and agility of this model. Additional features such as the inclusion of a standard M Sport package (optional on all other variants) – which comprises19-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels, M aerodynamics package, M leather steering wheel and a host of exclusive M Sports package trim features such as kidney grille with nine bars in high-gloss black and BMW individual roof-liner in anthracite - serves to further reflect the sporty pedigree and dynamic nature of this 435i Gran Coupé.

The 435i Gran Coupé also includes features such as Comfort Access which allows keyless entry to the vehicle and contactless opening of the tailgate and a 12-speaker 500W digitally amplified harman/kardon surround sound system.

Also available for the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is BMW ConnectedDrive, which provides access to a comprehensive range of in-car services and apps for unrivalled connectivity. This means all models in the range will come equipped with a permanent SIM card installed with BMW Teleservices and Intelligent emergency call activated.

Optionally available is the ConnectedDrive Lifestyle package which includes ConnectedDrive services (BMW Online and apps) and Remote services or the ConnectedDrive Freedom package which adds Real Time Traffic Information and Concierge services on top of the ConnectedDrive services and remote services.

All new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé models’ maintenance requirements are controlled by BMW’s Condition Based Service (CBS) programme which identifies the condition of a vehicle based on actual use, realising the full potential of a vehicle and minimising costs.
