Bolwell RV has won two prestigious awards from the automotive and design industries for its trend-setting Bolwell Edge caravan.

Not only has it won an Automotive Engineering Excellence Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A), but it has earned a Good Design™ award in the Australian International Design Awards.

Bolwell head designer Vaughan Bolwell was awarded SAE-A’s Special Commendation for the Edge in a field of leading-edge automotive engineering initiatives.

SAE-A Judging Panel Chair Bill Malkoutzis said it was reassuring to see a very high level of innovation and passion evident in the 2011 Awards entries, which were judged by an independent panel from the automotive industry and engineering academia.

“The correlation between the consumers' demands and the engineering projects entered in the Awards this year was clear to see,” he said.

The Edge was commended for its fully moulded fibreglass construction combining light weight, strength, and aerodynamics, with the interior and outer shells bonded to provide a rigid, frameless semi-monocoque unit.

Scarcely had its engineering been praised by the automotive industry when Bolwell RV earned the coveted Good Design™ designation in the Australian International Design Awards for 2011.

Brandon Gien, Managing Director of Good Design Australia, said the awards acknowledged an unwavering dedication to good design and commitment to a professional design process.

Australia’s foremost design endorsement scheme, the awards recognise companies that differentiate their products and services through design.

The Bolwell Edge competed with the cream of products from Australia and around the world to earn its place in the awards, which are assessed for innovation, form, function, quality, safety, sustainability and best-in-class design.

Vaughan Bolwell was lead designer on the Australian Institute of Sport - RMIT SupaRoo track bicycle, which won gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and has wide experience in designing trucks, architectural elements and industrial equipment.

He applied advanced aerodynamic principles and made extensive use of advanced composites in the Edge, including carbon fibre to add rigidity is some sections, and synthetic fibre to increase impact resistance in others.
