Honda Motor Co last week began construction of a new motor vehicle factory with a groundbreaking ceremony at Yorii, in the Saitami prefecture of Japan.

Honda's President and CEO, Takeo Fukui, turned the first clod of earth with Mikio Tsukui, Mayor of Yorii-machi and Kiyoshi Ueda, Governor of Saitama prefecture.

The 980,000-square metre plant is due to begin production in 2010 with a 200,000-car annual capacity.

Honda is building the plant along the concept of a people-friendly and resource/energy recycling that will employ high quality and high efficient production and logistics system.

To help the factory coexist in the local environment, Honda will establish Yorii-native plants in the factory grounds and on the factory roof.
