Honda Legend Revised For 2009

19th August, 2008

2009 Honda Legend

Honda’s slow-selling flagship Legend sedan delivers more power to luxury car buyers with the introduction of the new 2009 year model.

More power and torque, together with increased efficiency and refinement, highlight the new Legend’s mechanical upgrades. A host of styling enhancements and a larger alloy 18-inch wheel/tyre package complement the new model’s elevated performance potential.

Like its predecessor, the 2009 Legend remains the most powerful Honda in the range. This evolution of the seventh generation Legend sees the V6 VTEC engine increase its displacement from 3.5 to 3.7 litres, with peak power jumping to 226 kW and maximum torque increasing to 370 Nm.

Thanks to its added displacement and a new VTEC valve-train system, the new Legend’s 3.7-litre V6 becomes the most powerful production engine ever offered in a Honda sedan.

The new Legend’s power delivery remains spirited across the rev-range thanks to a host of hi-tech tweaks including an upgraded version of the five-speed Sequential SportShift transmission with sports mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle-shift controls. The paddle shifters can be used in both sports and normal modes, complementing a conventional straight-gate console-mounted gear selector.

Drive-by-wire throttle is retained, together with the definitive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system which set a new benchmark with the outgoing model’s 2006 debut. SH-AWD offers a key response that traditional AWD systems lack – in demanding cornering situations it boosts torque delivery to the outside rear wheel, improving balance, handling and sure-footed feedback to the driver.

Careful engineering optimisation during the 2009 Legend’s engine upgrade development programme means the new model’s official ADR fuel consumption has dropped, from 11.8L/100km to 11.3L/100km.

The new model remains compliant with the strict ‘Euro 4’ exhaust emissions standard.

A host of exterior styling upgrades give the new Legend a more taut appearance, in keeping with its extra performance potential. Aerodynamic efficiency was enhanced in the process, aiding fuel economy and on-road stability.

In all, 12 significant external changes were made. At the front, a new aluminium bonnet cuts weight and integrates into the car’s new bi-xenon headlights and upgraded pentagonal grille with its three distinctive horizontal bars and chrome surround. A new front bumper features integral fog lights and distinctive lower cooling air intakes.

At the side, new rocker panels and newly designed seven-spoke 18-inch alloy wheel with 245/45R18 tyres add to the vehicle’s confident stance. The upgraded tyre specification adds even more grip to Legend’s appeal, while new higher rate spring and damper settings ensure confident driver feedback and refined ride quality.

A new boot lid with integral spoiler, a new rear bumper, new tail-lights and a new exhaust treatment define the new Legend from the rear.

The final external upgrade for the 2009 Legend is the addition of a new ‘acoustic windscreen’ that sandwiches a thin film of butul alcohol between two bonded glass panels to deliver a whisper-quiet cabin. Noise, vibration and harshness levels have been further enhanced through the addition of extra insulation during construction and the Honda Active Noise Cancellation system, which transmits precise acoustic signals able to negate intrusive road noise.

The new Legend’s interior features a host of elegant upgrades. Both front seats now feature 10-way power adjustability and the steering wheel has been redesigned for greater comfort. Both the wheel and the gear selector are trimmed in supple leather and are complemented by brushed metal gauges. A 10-speaker BOSE Sound System and Satellite Navigation System are standard equipment on the new Legend. Additionally, the climate control air conditioning functions have been redesigned.

The 2009 Legend retains a commitment to occupant safety, with a host of standard features including six airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist, Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, anti-lock brakes and a reversing camera.

The recommended retail price for the new Honda Legend is $77,500 and is on sale from 1st September, 2008.
