The all-new Hyundai i20 is designed to provide convenience, comfort, safety and efficiency in a modern vibrant package. Whether it’s negotiating the urban jungle or escaping out of town, i20 is all about going places.

Buzzing with fresh ideas and smart solutions, it's sharp and stylish on the outside, while the i20's wheelbase gives it an agile stance and spacious interior. Hyundai’s expertise in interior packaging has produced a cabin which ensures passenger comfort and storage space have been maximised, without compromising the external dimensions that make the car so convenient to drive.

Thanks to the engineering quality built into its suspension, brakes, body structure and safety systems, i20 offers occupants a high level of protection.

Designed at Hyundai’s European Design Studio at Russelsheim in Germany, the latest model in the i-series line-up offers comfort, economy and efficiency in a compact vehicle designed to get people going places.

Strong character lines and feature details including teardrop headlamps, stacked rear lighting clusters and body coloured mirrors and handles continue the streamlined appearance. Front and rear guard flares combined with wrap around bumpers ensure a sporty aesthetic. Three and five door hatchback models offer versatile options for today’s modern lifestyle.

The Hyundai i20 offers an interior package that belies its compact size. Airy with practical and versatile features, the in-cabin refinements are smart and fresh, with optimum driver comfort and passenger conveniences including delayed fade-out interior lights, an illuminated glove box compartment, electric windows and comfortable spacious seating complimented with a Multi-Information Centre located above the centre console for external temperature, clock, trip read-outs, fuel consumption (Elite and Premium models) and more.

Seating and storage options in the i20 are addressed with the provision of versatile split rear seating and a generous 295-litre boot (rear seat backs in upright position). Multiple in-cabin stowage areas such as the innovative glove-box cooling system and storage recesses for convenient placement of mobile phone, sunglasses and coins, provide easy access storage solutions.

Thrifty 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre Gamma petrol engines power the Hyundai i20, balancing performance and efficiency. Both engines feature 16-valves and twin overhead camshafts. The four-cylinder engines deliver peak power and torque outputs of 73.5 kW @ 5,500 rpm and 136 Nm @ 4,200 rpm for the 1.4-litre Gamma petrol engine; and 91.1 kW @ 6,300 rpm and 156 Nm @ 4,200 rpm for the 1.6-litre Gamma petrol engine.

And because i20 is all about a vibrant life, a comprehensive range of Genuine Hyundai Accessories is available including Genuine Hyundai Whispbar™ Quiet roof racks, iPod® accessories including Direct Connect lead for iPod® and reverse park and front park assist sensing warning systems ensuring parking is a breeze. Alloy wheels and other distinctive styling accessories let owners add personality and individuality.

All-new Hyundai i20 is all about going places.

Going places in style

Exterior
From a chrome finished radiator grille with integrated ‘H’ logo, to the supporting oversized matt-black air inlet, the design is distinctively Hyundai. Stable and refined, a straight character line dominates the bonnet while the modern lines are strengthened with sharp lighting details including streamlined teardrop headlamps and integrated front round fog lamps (standard in Elite and Premium models).

The side character of i20 with front and rear flares presents a sporty aesthetic. Convex and concave shaping on the doors offers a unique style with body-coloured door handles and wedge style side repeater lamps. The streamlined theme continues with body coloured electric adjustable side mirrors as standard which fold electrically as standard on all five-door models.

The eye-catching rear of i20 delivers a striking stacked rear lighting cluster, with a sleek integrated lift-up style tailgate handle centrally located.

All model variants are easily identified by unique wheel designs (15” steel on Active, 15” alloy on Elite and 16” alloy on Premium), further adding to the range’s individuality.

Interior
Detailed consideration has gone into ensuring optimum comfort in the driver space, offering balance, ambience and comfort. The modern metallic finish of the centre fascia is mirrored in the three-spoke steering wheel inserts, side air vents and the centre floor mounted transmission lever. Driver comfort and convenience is provided through manually controlled tilt and telescopic steering to ensure a comfortable driving position, while multi-function stork and steering wheel mounted audio controls (Elite and Premium models) allow instant one-touch management of wipers, headlamps, lighting and indicators, as well as the entertainment system.

The clutter-free instrumentation cluster providing speedometer, odometer and tachometer read-outs is logically designed for driver ease, and complimented with a Multi-Information Centre for external temperature, clock, trip read-outs and fuel consumption (Elite and Premium models) located in the centre console area.

Front door trims house the switch panel for operation of electric windows with driver one-touch auto up and down, window lock function and electric folding side mirrors (standard on all five-door models).

Various lighting sources are placed throughout the cabin for both driver and passenger convenience, including delayed fade-out interior lights, individual driver and front passenger map lamps in the overhead console, luggage lamp and an illuminated glove box compartment.

The i20 provides an integrated in-dash audio package with CD player, MP3, WMA and AM/FM tuner. The auxiliary audio input jack and USB input with iPod® connectivity allows connection to external audio sources. A roof mounted aerial provides reception for the AM/FM tuner, while the four speaker system (six-speakers on Elite and Premium models) delivers good quality sound.

Convenient air-conditioning controls (automatic climate control standard in Premium models) are located in the centre fascia providing ease of adjustment and maintenance of cabin temperature, while heating and ventilation is provided via foot well ducting for rear passengers.

Seating
Continuing the search for the most comfortable and ergonomically compatible seating, Hyundai engineers have developed a new and more efficient seat mechanism for the little i20. The shape has been enhanced to optimise the horizontal and vertical seat elements offering maximum support and comfort with height adjustable driver’s seat cushion, four-way movement on front seating and adjustable head restraints.

A combination cloth-leather seat with all-leather drivers arm rest featuring red piping makes a statement in the Premium model, with Active and Elite models fitted with black cloth fabric offering detail and quality combined with a fresh modern style.

Rear passengers experience a comfortable and spacious ride with liberal leg and head room, whilst large windows provide light and space and adjustable head restraints offer personalised protection.

Storage
Ample stowage options are available in the intelligent interior design of the i20. The deceptively spacious interior offers 60:40 split folding rear seats providing generous and flexible luggage and stowage options. A flat floor panel and broad opening hatch provide a generous boot capacity of 295-litres (rear seat backs in upright position) under the luggage cover. An elasticised storage net provides added practicality and safety to rear stowed items (standard in Elite and Premium models).

Multiple interior storage options are provided for front and rear occupants including deep, generous seatback pockets, while front doors feature integrated pockets. The centre console contains a spacious glovebox, dual cup-holders and a lidded storage recess for convenient placement of mobile phone, sunglasses, coins or other small items. An innovative glovebox cooling system is standard on all models for refreshments and additional convenient features include front passenger seat bag hook (Elite and Premium models), driver side sunvisor ticket holder, integrated grab handles  and additional rear seat mounted coat hook (on all five-door models).

Going places economically

The nimble performance of i20 is delivered by a range of thrifty four-cylinder Gamma petrol engines, featuring 16-valve twin overhead camshafts with transverse front-mounted front wheel drive configuration.

The newly developed five-speed manual transmission in i20 - lighter, stronger and quieter - offers precise and easy shift with ideal gear ratios matched to engine output. The four-speed electronic HiVec (Hyundai intelligent Vehicle electronic control) automatic transmission comes with overdrive and lock-up torque converter ensuring economic operation.

1.4-litre and 1.6-litre Gamma petrol engines
All i20 models are powered by either the Gamma 1.4-litre or 1.6-litre engine featuring high pressure cast aluminium cylinder blocks with ladder frame design for improved stiffness and durability. Advanced design techniques to deliver robust performance and fuel efficiency are made possible with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for Double Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) providing brisk acceleration for urban demands and smooth power delivery for longer journeys.

The Gamma engine design applies a maintenance-free silent timing chain system for decreasing noise at acceleration or idle, while the ratchet type hydraulic system prevents jumping.

Ride and handling
Steering precision is fundamental to achieving agile handling, and fine tuning of the rack and pinion electric system in the Hyundai i20 provides accurate handling on a variety of road conditions.

Like the i30 and, i30cw wagon, i20’s suspension has been tuned for Australia’s unique road conditions, offering sharp response, accurate handling and a comfortable ride on a variety of road conditions. McPherson Strut front suspension is combined with a Coupled Torsion Beam Axle at the rear for precise manoeuvrability and ride comfort. Separate shock absorbers and coil springs help distribute load impact.

Lively, urban agility is evident in i20’s handling, with sharp accurate directional response made possible through the application of Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) calibrated for the Australian market.

NVH
Hyundai engineers have incorporated noise management technologies to minimise road transmitted vibration, wind noise, powertrain noise. The exhaust system has been simplified by removing the traditional centre muffler, also reducing the overall vehicle weight, and an engine mounting system which applies a three-point inertia support system to manage under-bonnet noise.

Exceptional efficiency
The 'heart' of i20 lies in the peppy petrol engines options available. The 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6-litre petrol four-cylinder Gamma petrol engines, deliver good fuel efficiency, lower emissions* and minimum operating costs.

The i20 Elite and Premium models include a trip computer which provides distance to empty, average fuel consumption, elapsed time and trip odometer functions.

Going places safely

Active Safety
Outstanding occupant protection is a core element of Hyundai design. i20 comes complete with a suite of advanced safety features to ensure driver and passenger confidence. Standard on all i20 models is Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control System (TCS), four-channel, four-sensor Anti-skid Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) supported by a Brake Assist System (BAS).

ESC compares the driver’s intended course with the vehicle’s actual response. The highly developed braking system features four-wheel disc brakes controlled by an advanced four-channel ABS with BAS, providing maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected; and EBD to optimise brake performance with uneven weight distribution.

In addition, seatbelt warning chimes, door ajar and front fog lamps (Elite and Premium models) assist in accident prevention.

Passive Safety
The Hyundai i20 is engineered to provide occupants with multiple defensive safety layers. Passive safety features include three-point retractable seatbelts at all five seating positions, while front row seatbelts have pretensioners, load limiters and are height adjustable. There are three child-seat anchorage points and child safety door locks on rear doors are standard across the range.

Optimum in-cabin protection is provided with the inclusion of driver and front passenger airbags standard on all models, with driver and front passenger side (thorax) and front and rear side curtain airbags standard on Elite and Premium models. The combination of side and curtain airbags help protect the head and body during side impacts. In addition, height adjustable head restraints for all occupants minimise head and neck injury.

Advanced structural manufacturing techniques are applied to i20 including the use of ultra-high tensile steel to increase body rigidity and strength around key impact absorption zones such as the roofline above the B-pillar and front lower floor sill. This added stiffness also assists to decrease noise and vibration generated by the body of the vehicle.

The front of the i20 has been designed to absorb and dissipate the impact energy during a frontal collision, with dual side impact intrusion bars in all doors and reinforced body and chassis with rigid cabin and crumple zones front and rear providing optimum occupant safety. To reduce the risk of pedestrian injury in an accident, proactive safety design features have been applied in the engine and bonnet areas, including a crumple zone in the guard and where the bonnet meets the base of the windscreen. The bonnet release latch is located towards the back of the front upper cross member to reduce the chance of upper leg injuries.
