Design and Interior Styling

The ‘fluidic sculpture’ ethos utilises flowing lines inspired by nature and modern architecture to give a constant three-dimensional presence to Hyundai vehicles, and has become distinctly recognisable providing a clear family 'DNA' to the Hyundai range of passenger vehicles.

Designed at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Germany, the new generation i30 design incorporates strong fluid lines exuding a powerful, 'athletic' stance with a discrete sense of constant motion. The quiet confidence of i30 comes from its sporty profile and dynamic proportions.

Thomas Bürkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre, comments: “When designing new generation i30, we used strong, fluid lines to sculpt a car which looks athletic and exudes a sense of constant motion, even when stationary. We gave the car a bold stance, transmitting a confident attitude through sporty characteristics and dynamic proportions. In this respect, it is very close to the all-new i40, and the strength of Hyundai’s design DNA is easy for people to recognise in both these models.”

The new generation i30 proudly bears Hyundai’s signature frontal feature – the hexagonal-shaped grille. “The hexagonal appearance is unique to our brand and defines the new generation i30 as a Hyundai family member. The jewel-like front headlamps which flank the grille add a strong personality to the vehicle, as well as a sense of refinement and luxury,” adds Bürkle.

Strong body lines running front to back with distinct side character lines and sculpted wheel arches offset the sleek flow of the sloping roofline providing a graceful side profile. The progressive, organic styling cues of all-new i30 deliver an elegant and distinctly European 'persona'.

The interior of the new generation Hyundai i30 offers a sense of space, refinement and luxury complimenting the dynamic exterior and demonstrating Hyundai’s emphasis on interior packaging, lighting and quality. The vibrant cabin uses contrasting metallic surfaces, piano black inserts and numerous soft-touch finishes providing a suitable interior ambience.

Refinements include a four-spoke steering wheel with fingertip controls allowing the driver to manage numerous systems including audio, trip computer and cruise control as well as ‘Flex-Steer™’ settings allowing the driver to choose from three steering calibrations - Comfort, Normal and Sport - to suit their desired steering weight characteristics. Elite and Premium models have an instrument cluster with two-cylinder design displaying key information with crystal clarity and minimal eye stress.

Premium variants feature an Electronic Park Brake (EPB) providing effortless operation of the parking brake and allows for additional centre console storage which also houses a rear air ventilation system. In addition, push-button start with smart key entry which includes key sensitive auto-folding exterior-mounted rear-view mirrors and puddle lighting offers further driver convenience on Elite and Premium models, where even the front door handles feature courtesy illumination.

Comfort and convenience for passengers is delivered by the inclusion of standard features such as glove box cooling and auto up and down power windows, front and rear. For maximum comfort the Elite and Premium models feature dual-zone climate control, rear centre arm rest with cup holders, sunvisor extenders, and tilt adjust front head restraints.

On the Premium model, the full length panoramic sunroof is an electric tilt and slide glass roof which allows natural light to flood the cabin or a view of the stars. The sunroof has been designed to open fully or tilt open, offering flexibility and functionality, and features an adjustable full-length shade which affords the cabin effective heat insulation. In addition the Premium model gains a 10-way power driver’s seat with electric lumbar support.

Get connected with Hyundai i30

The new generation i30 offers cutting-edge multimedia capability. The 5” colour touch screen (7” in Elite and Premium models) audio system incorporates an AM/FM tuner, iPod® and Bluetooth® connectivity (hands-free telephone and audio streaming), in-dash CD player, four speakers, two tweeters, USB/auxiliary input, MP3 functionality with media ripping/storage and album art display in the Active model.

Elite and Premium models debuts Hyundai’s integrated satellite navigation system, which is operated via the 7” colour touch screen. This all-new state-of-the-art system offers features including SUNA live traffic updates, a comprehensive Point of Interest (POI) database and Navteq™ maps.

The new generation i30’s GPS navigation system is a first for Australian market Hyundai vehicles. The Navteq™ mapping offers guidance for over one million kilometres of roads and highways, as well as offering hundreds of thousands of points of interest reference points including ATMs, petrol stations, restaurants, shops and accommodation.

Key features of the system include: 7" full map colour display (2D/3D), touch screen, motorway junction views, lane guidance, speed warnings, 3D landmark visuals, multi-route planning (fast, short, eco), easy access to “parking” location function, traffic information through Traffic Message Channel (TMC),  detour function and address input with intelligent typewriter.

Perhaps the most effective feature for driver assistance is the SUNA live traffic update, which utilises on-line live coverage of the planned route to notify on road incidents and delays. SUNA offers live alternative route options.

Proportions and storage

Passengers will appreciate the new-generation i30’s spacious interior.

Although the 2,650 mm wheelbase is carried over for the new model i30, the increase in overall vehicle length (4,300 mm) and width (1,780 mm) has been exploited to provide more space for occupants and greater cargo space.

Front seat occupants can enjoy 27 mm more headroom, 11 mm more legroom, and 14 mm of additional shoulder room.

Boot capacity is boosted by 11% to 378-litres (up 38-litres), the dashboard glovebox is enlarged by 38% to 8-litres (up from 5.8-litres), bottle storage in the front door trims is doubled in size to 1.5-litres and new 0.6-litre storage pockets are provided in the rear doors for models.

Power, Performance and Precision

The new generation i30 is available with a choice of two powerful and efficient engines, available on all models in the range.

Hyundai’s new all-aluminium 1.8-litre ‘Nu’ petrol engine delivers a peak power output of 110 kW @ 6,500 rpm, and peak torque of 178 Nm @ 4,700 rpm. This engine offers improved power and fuel consumption over the outgoing model’s 2.0-litre engine. Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) offers optimum power and efficiency, and provides a 30% reduction in hydrocarbon emissions. The ‘Nu’ engine also features hydraulic engine mounts and a maintenance-free silent timing chain system to enhance durability and improve Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH).

The diesel variants are powered by an improved 1.6-litre high output power plant from Hyundai’s ‘U2’ engine family. Utilising Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) technology and a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), the U2 engine offers low emissions, impressive torque and power outputs, and remarkable fuel economy.

Engine design efficiencies deliver fuel consumption as low as 4.5-litres/100 km** for highway travel in the manual variant ‘U2’ 1.6-litre CRDi diesel engine model with a CO2 emission rating of 119 g/km.

With a peak power output of 94 kW @ 4,000 rpm, and peak torque of 260 Nm @ 1,900-2,750 rpm, Hyundai i30 diesel models offer an good blend of performance and efficiency.

Hyundai has matched the i30’s 1.8-litre ‘Nu’ and 1.6-litre ‘U2’ diesel engines to a either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission.

The six-speed manual transmission utilises multi-cone synchronisers for improved shift quality, and the inclusion of a button-operated reverse gear lock-out provides ease of operation, whilst the short stroke provides a quick and accurate shift action.

The six-speed automatic transmission with sequential manual mode is characterised by smooth gear shifting and exceptional fuel economy. The use of an ultra-flat torque converter results in improved durability and weight efficiency.

To further enhance the economy of the powertrain, a gear shift indicator on manual variants prompts the driver to change gear to maximise fuel economy. On automatic variants, the advice is through an ECO indicator.

Ride & Handling

Extensive tuning and specific calibration of the new generation i30’s suspension system was undertaken in Australia over thousands of kilometres and numerous road conditions, to ensure the vehicle delivers optimum performance for our unique road surfaces.

The new generation i30 is fitted with Sachs dampers front and rear, which were optimised by Sachs technicians whilst testing in Australia was undertaken. The front dampers include rebound springs for better front-end responsiveness, allowing sharper and more accurate changes of direction. The rear dampers are a high performance mono-tube design, ensuring optimal ride comfort and vehicle control is achieved at all times.

Speed sensitive Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) is used on new generation i30, utilising an electric motor to enable varying degrees of power assist for varied conditions. MDPS not only minimises weight and fuel consumption, but also integrates with the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system.

Flex Steer™ a new feature from Hyundai, offers three driver-selected steering calibrations. The Normal setting provides an optimal balance between steering effort and feedback, making it ideal for the majority of drivers on the road. The Comfort setting further reduces the weight of the steering and allows for effortless manoeuvring, making it ideal for drivers who prefer a more relaxed driving experience. Finally, the Sport setting increases steering weight and feedback for maximum driver involvement.

MDPS tuning for each of the Flex Steer™ settings was also performed locally in order to optimise the system for Australian conditions.

Noise Vibration & Harshness

The use of sophisticated NVH applications including double-layered door sealing gaskets and the application of sound deadening foam applied to six key locations along the pillars reduces indoor noise seepage. Specially designed joint structure of the inside belt of the weather strips improves pillar fit which, combined with door handles designed for optimum aerodynamics, results in much improved levels of vibration and harshness and outstanding levels of refinement.

Cabin noise has been cut to class-leading levels, with engine noise at idle down to 38 dB, acceleration noise lowered by 1 dB and road noise by 8 dB.

Five-star safety features

The new-generation Hyundai i30 delivers high levels of active and passive safety technologies to ensure maximum protection for occupants. EuroNCAP has awarded the new Hyundai i30 hatchback a five star crash worthiness rating.

Active safety is augmented with the use of Hyundai’s innovative Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which integrates the Motor Driven Power System (MDPS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and the Traction Control System (TCS) to provide enhanced directional stability.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist System (BAS) are also standard across the new-generation i30 range. An Electronic Park Brake (EPB) is standard in Premium models.

The new generation i30 also incorporates high levels of passive safety with seven airbags – driver and front passenger, driver’s knee, driver & front passenger side (thorax) and full length side curtains. Hyundai Active Locking Operation (HALO), which incorporates central door locking, engine immobiliser and keyless entry with alarm, is also standard on all models.

The extensive use of Ultra High Tensile Steel (UHTSS) in key structural locations, combined with targeted enhanced structure connection and reinforcement further improves crashworthiness, and ensures stiffer, safer vehicle integrity.

The introduction of rear park assist as standard across the new generation i30 range confirms Hyundai’s commitment to making safety assist technologies available to all buyers. Elite and Premium models also feature a reverse camera displayed via the in-dash 7” satellite navigation touch screen.

Colour and trim

The new generation Hyundai i30 is available in three trim levels - Active, Elite, and Premium - and will be available in seven exterior colours matched to a black interior.

Warranty and roadside assistance

Hyundai offer the new generation i30 with a 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty, which is fully transferrable to subsequent owners, helping protect the new i30’s resale value.
