The Hyundai i30 Tourer in detail

Dimensions and Storage

Sharing the i30 hatch's 2,650mm wheelbase, the i30 Tourer adds 185mm in total length and offers 528-litres of stowage capacity with rear seats up, an increase of 150-litres over the hatch, and 113-litres over the previous-generation i30 Tourer. This expands to a massive 1,642 litres with the second row seats folded flat, an increase of 326 litres over the hatch and 247-litres over its predecessor. Supplementary underfloor storage compartments further add to the i30 Tourer’s versatile and practical nature.

Ample interior storage solutions include cargo blind and safety barrier and cargo net as standard, cup holders, glove box cooling compartment, sunglass compartment, ticket holders in sun visors, twin 12V power outlets in the centre console, a single 12V power outlet in luggage area, front and rear map pockets and a front centre armrest with a large integrated storage box.

Design and Styling

The i30 Tourer exemplifies Hyundai’s brand concept and delivers new levels of comfort, style and practicality to the small car segment.

Featuring the same progressive and sophisticated cues as sibling i30 hatch, the Tourer has an athletic and composed stance with the illusion of continual movement attributed to ‘fluidic sculpture’, Hyundai’s design 'DNA'.

The new-generation i30 bears Hyundai’s signature frontal feature – the hexagonal-shaped grille in deluxe dark chrome. Elite models feature a striking chrome belt line running from front to back, complimented by flowing side character lines linking the projector beam headlamps to the rear tail treatment. Roof rails accent the slender flowing roofline which is punctuated by a sporty rear spoiler with LED high-mount stop lamp.

A low loading height and ingress angles to the wagon are not only convenient but deliver a sporty edge to the rear tailgate design. Elite models are fitted with a number of other convenience design features, including automatic folding side mirrors with LED side repeaters, illuminated door handles and puddle lamps, automatic dusk sensing headlamps, and auto windscreen defog function.

The interior of Hyundai i30 Tourer is subtle yet striking. Clean lines with defined angles offer a sense of space, refinement, and luxury, complimenting the dynamic exterior and demonstrating Hyundai’s emphasis on interior packaging, lighting, and build quality. The cabin combines contrasting metallic surfaces, piano black inserts, and soft-touch finishes, providing a pleasant interior ambience.

Enhancements include a four spoke steering wheel with fingertip controls allowing the ultimate driver management of audio, trip computer and cruise control, as well as ‘Flex-Steer™’ settings allowing the driver to choose from three steering calibrations - Comfort, Normal and Sport - to suit their desired steering weight preference. Elite models feature a supervision instrument cluster with a colour TFT LCD centre display, providing key information with crystal clarity.

Adding convenience for occupants, standard features include power windows front and rear, remote keyless entry, and tilt and telescopic steering adjustment. The Elite model also features dual zone climate control, illuminated sun visors, rear seat centre arm rest, power windows auto up/down on all windows and tilt adjust front head restraints.

In-Car Multimedia System

The new-generation i30 Tourer offers forward-thinking multimedia capability. The 5” colour touch screen audio system incorporates an AM/FM tuner, iPod® and Bluetooth® connectivity (hands-free telephone and audio streaming), in-dash CD player, four speakers, two tweeters, USB/auxiliary input, MP3 functionality with media ripping, all managed via the steering wheel mounted finger-tip controls.

The Elite model includes Hyundai’s integrated satellite navigation system, which is operated via the 7” colour touch screen. This state-of-the-art system offers features including SUNA live traffic updates, a comprehensive Point of Interest (POI) database and Navteq™ maps.

The i30 Tourer’s GPS navigation system, first seen in i30 hatch, operates with Navteq™ mapping which offers guidance for over one million kilometres of roads and highways, as well as offering hundreds of thousands of points of interest reference points including ATMs, petrol stations, restaurants, shops, and accommodation.

Key features of the system include: 7" full map colour display (2D/3D), touch screen, motorway junction views, lane guidance, speed warnings, 3D landmark visuals, multi-route planning (fast, short, eco), easy access to “parking” location function, traffic information through Traffic Message Channel (TMC), detour function and address input with intelligent typewriter.

Perhaps the most effective feature for driver assistance is the SUNA live traffic update, which utilises on-line live coverage of the planned route to notify on road incidents and delays. SUNA offers live alternative route options.

Performance with Efficiency

The new-generation i30 Tourer is available with a choice of two powerful and efficient engines.

The petrol i30 Tourer utilises the 1.6-Litre GDI petrol engine from Hyundai’s Gamma engine family. Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) is used to improve drivability, fuel economy, and emissions and achieves a 5-star Green Vehicle Guide rating (manual variants only). Power output is 99kW @ 6,300 rpm and torque 163 Nm @ 4850 rpm, with fuel economy of 6.3 litres/100km for the manual.

Diesel variants are powered by an improved 1.6-litre high output power plant from Hyundai’s ‘U-II’ engine family. Utilising Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) technology and a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), the U-II engine offers low emissions, impressive torque and power outputs, and remarkable fuel economy. The engine design provides an outstanding blend of performance and efficiency delivering fuel consumption of 4.6-litres/100 km for the manual variant, with a peak power output of 94 kW @ 4,000 rpm, and peak torque of 260 Nm @ 1,900-2,750 rpm.

Hyundai has matched the i30 Tourer’s 1.6-litre GDI and 1.6-litre ‘U-II’ diesel engines to a either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed automatic transmission with sequential manual mode is characterised by smooth shifting and exceptional fuel economy.

Ride and Handling

The new-generation Hyundai i30 Tourer is fitted with MacPherson Strut front suspension and a sophisticated multi-link independent rear suspension, a combination which delivers a great compromise between handling sharpness and ride quality.

Speed sensitive Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) utilises an electric motor to enable varying degrees of power assist for various conditions and driver preferences. MDPS not only minimises weight and fuel consumption, but also integrates seamlessly with the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, applying corrective lock automatically in emergency situations.

Flex Steer™ offers three driver-selected steering calibrations. The Normal setting provides an optimal balance between steering effort and feedback, making it ideal for the majority of drivers on the road. The Comfort setting reduces the weight of the steering and allows for effortless manoeuvring, making it ideal for drivers who prefer a more relaxed driving experience, especially around town. Finally, the Sport setting increases steering weight and feedback for maximum driver involvement. Flex Steer was first seen in the i30 hatch and is another driver-focused development from Hyundai.

5-Star Safety

Achieving the maximum 5-Star ANCAP safety rating, the i30 Tourer offers a comprehensive range of active and passive safety technologies. Standard across all models in the range are Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), and ABS with EBD & Brake Assist System (BAS), while advanced passive safety features include the use of ultra-high tensile steel within the body shell.

Standard key safety systems for Hyundai i30 Tourer include; Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), LED daytime running lamps, LED high mount stop lamp, projector beam headlamps, and four-sensor rear park assist. The Elite model also features a rear view camera with in-dash display.

The inclusion in Tourer of a speed limiter function allows the driver to set a speed limit, where the vehicle will cease to increase speed beyond this limit ensuring the vehicle will adhere to driver set limits such as school zones. In emergency situations where acceleration is required, the system is automatically overridden when full throttle is applied.

The new-generation i30 also incorporates high levels of passive safety with seven airbags including driver and front passenger, driver’s knee, driver & front passenger side (thorax) and full length side curtains, pretensioners, load limiters, and height adjustable seatbelts are also standard. Hyundai Active Locking Operation (HALO), which incorporates central door locking, engine immobiliser and keyless entry with alarm, is also standard on all models.

Colour and Trim

The new-generation i30 Tourer is available in two trim levels, Active and Elite, and will be available in four exterior colours matched to a black interior.
