• Lexus Australia to expand IS model range to include IS 250, IS 350 and an all-new IS 300h hybrid
• New hybrid drivetrain to target sub-100 grammes of C02 per 100km**, while achieving sub-4.3L per 100km** and developing a combined power output of 162 kW
• Completely redesigned inside and out; engineered to offer an engaging, entertaining driving experience
• Best-in-class rear seat space and enhanced luggage capacity with 60:40 rear fold seats
• F Sport model range combining dynamic enhancements with exclusive exterior and interior design
• All-new exterior and interior design, featuring Lexus spindle grille and LFA-inspired, driver-focused cockpit

Lexus unveiled its all-new IS Line at America's Detroit Motor Show earlier this month.

The unveiling coincides with confirmation that Lexus Australia will offer an all-new, highly efficient hybrid drivetrain in the new IS Line alongside 2.5 and 3.5-litre all-alloy quad-cam V6 engines.

The IS 250, IS 350 and new IS 300h hybrid models will be available in popular F Sport variants, which now account for up to 30 per cent of all IS Line sales and 50 per cent of IS 350 sales.

In keeping with the F Sport philosophy, all F Sport models will add further dynamic and visual enhancements to the already dynamically engaging new IS Line.

In conjunction with a dramatic new design featuring the Lexus spindle grille, the new IS has been engineered to provide outstanding dynamic capabilities.

Lexus IS chief engineer Junichi Furuyama said that achieving driving enjoyment was central to the development of new IS.

"We adopted an entirely different approach to the development of the new IS," said Mr Furuyama. "Rather than developing each individual aspect in the hope that they would combine to offer an engaging driving experience, we first established the pleasurable driving experience owners desire as our major premise, and then we developed the individual performance elements to support it.

"Every aspect of the new IS has been engineered with a renewed focus on the sporting performance, agile handling, accurate response to driver input and highly communicative feedback,"
he said.

Incorporating no less than 12 Lexus-first features and technical innovations, the new IS also showcases an all-new interior that combines all the refinement and quality expected of any Lexus. It has a more sporting, driver-focused environment, a significant improvement in rear-seat space for best-in-class roominess, and a larger, more convenient luggage compartment with 60:40 rear-fold seats.

Exterior design

Following the new generation GS and LS models, and the significantly re-engineered RX and LX models, the all-new IS features Lexus' new corporate identity incorporating the spindle grille frontal design. The new design language achieves a combination of aggressive elegance, a more powerful road presence and a stronger brand identity.

In profile, the mass of the cabin is concentrated rearwards and a rising line flowing from the lower body into the rear lamp clusters adds further style and dynamism.

The exterior design incorporates a new, powerfully articulated headlamp cluster design with Lexus trademark, L-shaped Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) located independently below.

Interior design

Featuring a clean and sporting design theme, the cabin provides a driver-focused, ergonomically designed environment. The newly designed driver's seat offers greater comfort and better lateral support. Both the seat hip point and the angle of the new, LFA-inspired steering wheel have been lowered and steering reach adjustment increased, providing a more sporting driving position.

Cabin material, trim and finish refinement is complemented by the latest advances in HMI (human-machine interface) technology, and a high-quality analogue clock with surface-emitting illumination.

The centre console incorporates Lexus-first electrostatic switches to allow control of conditioning temperature with the touch of a finger.

The new Lexus IS has a wheelbase 70mm longer than its predecessor and is 10mm wider, providing best-in-class rear seat room and luggage capacity.

The combination of extended wheelbase and a thinner front seat design generates an 85mm increase in knee room for the new, 60:40 split/folding seats, and improved accessibility.

The new IS 300h battery is positioned beneath the luggage deck board, providing excellent boot capacity with no decrease in space over petrol models.

Driving dynamics

Claimed segment-leading driving enjoyment is at the heart of the new IS' development, and every aspect of the new Lexus sedan's driving dynamics has been painstakingly engineered to achieve that goal.

New, laser screw welding (spiral-type weld) and adhesive body bonding techniques, along with additional spot welding, have increased overall body rigidity.

The double wishbone front suspension system has been revised, offering a 20 per cent increase in roll rigidity. To the rear, a new multi-link suspension system similar to that of the latest-generation GS has been adopted.

Adaptive variable suspension will be offered for the first time on selected IS models.

The structure and rigidity of the steering gear box has been revised to provide a lighter, smoother, more accurate steering feel. This will be teamed with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) on selected models.

The 3.5-litre, rear-wheel drive IS models are now equipped with the eight-speed, Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission from the acclaimed Lexus IS F. It incorporates a manual mode for faster shifting and rev matching 'blipping' on the downshift.

A new Drive Mode Select system features up to four switchable driving modes - ECO, NORMAL, SPORT/SPORT S and SPORT S+ (the latter available on vehicles equipped with AVS) - enabling the driver to select their preferred combination of economy, comfort, performance and handling characteristics.

F Sport

IS F Sport models not only benefit from genuine dynamic enhancements in the form of exclusively tuned front and rear suspension systems, but also more sporting and aggressive exterior and interior design features.

Externally, F Sport models are instantly recognisable by a more aggressive spindle grille design with a more prominent chrome trim and an exclusive mesh design.

On board, F Sport models inherit the LFA's innovative driver's meter with moving centre ring.

An exclusive seat design uses an 'integrated foaming' construction method to combine excellent comfort with outstanding lateral holding performance.

Both the front and rear suspension systems and the Electric Power Steering (EPS) are exclusively tuned for the F Sport package, enhancing handling performance without affecting ride quality.

The new suspension system will be further enhanced by an Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) on all F Sport models and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) on 3.5-litre engine F Sport models.

Powertrains

All-new IS models will feature rear-wheel drive.

New for IS and in its first application, the IS 300h's full hybrid rear-wheel drive system combines a powerful electric motor with a newly developed, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine featuring a new, direct injection, D-4S fuel injection system, dual VVT-i and a high-efficiency Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.

The powerful yet efficient hybrid powertrain will develop a combined power output of 162 kW.

The system targets class-leading CO2 emissions of below 100g/km**, and average fuel consumption of less than 4.3 L/100 km**.

Advanced safety

A newly developed Lexus-first pyrotechnic pop-up bonnet design with in-bumper sensors makes space to absorb pedestrian impact force, allowing for the lowest possible vehicle front profile while optimising pedestrian impact protection and minimising false triggering from stationary objects.

Several advanced new active safety features are fitted on the new IS, including Automatic High Beam, Blind Spot Monitor and in a first for Lexus in Australia, Lane Departure Warning system on selected models.
