Mazda 6 Diesel Confirmed For Australia

19th September, 2008

Copy image of Mazda 6 wagon (petrol engine model) Mazda will introduce a 2.2-litre turbodiesel to the Mazda 6 range by the end of the year.

The new Mazda 6 MZR-CD hatch and wagon will bring turbodiesel performance and environmental credentials to provide the brand with an entrant in the competitive diesel market, currently the domain of Peugeot and Volkswagen, with Ford, Renault and Skoda as active 'players'.

The new 2.2-litre common-rail turbodiesel engine is a Mazda powerplant which employs direct-injection technology to produce 136 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque, up 31 kW and 40 Nm on the 2.0-litre engine it replaces.

The new Mazda 6 MZR-CD is expected to deliver a combined-cycle fuel economy number similar to the 5.9L/100 km of the discontinued model.

Mazda Australia Managing Director Doug Dickson said, "This spirited and economical new-generation engine will further cement Mazda's leadership as the only Japanese brand offering diesel-powered passenger cars for environmentally conscious Australians."

"This new diesel engine will deliver on the seemingly conflicting attributes of robust and refined, powerful and efficient. And we're confident it'll arrive with a compelling sub-$40,000 price."

Mr Dickson said the Mazda 6's new engine will make diesel synonymous with exhilaration.

"The new Mazda 6 MZR-CD will appeal to economy-minded buyers and true driving enthusiasts. With 400 Nm on tap from just 1,800 rpm, and mated to a sporty six-speed manual transmission, it will deliver spirited in-gear acceleration and an exhilarating driving experience."

The new Mazda 6 MZR-CD is the first step towards Mazda's Sustainable Zoom-Zoom commitment to improve fuel efficiency by 30 per cent across its range by 2015.

"The new Mazda 6 MZR-CD will be proof that environmentally-friendly cars can also be exhilarating to drive," said Mr Dickson.

The Mazda 6 MZR-CD is expected to hit showrooms in December 2008 in hatch and wagon body styles.
