Limited Edition Mazda RX-8 Hits Australia

4th February, 2008

Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Model

A limited-edition Mazda RX-8 rotary sports coupe is now available in Australia.

The Mazda RX-8 Rotary Engine 40th Anniversary model builds on the exclusivity inherent in the world's only rotary-powered sports car with performance and styling modifications designed to enhance the RX-8's uniqueness.

Some 200 examples of the RX-8 Anniversary model are now on sale in Australia, priced at $55,840 (RRP) in an effort to maintain interest in the model.

Since the 1967 introduction of Mazda's first vehicle powered by a rotary engine, the Cosmo Sport (known as the 110S in some markets), Mazda has continued to produce and sell various rotary engine-powered cars, most notably the Familia Rotary Coupe (also known as the R100), the Savanna (RX-3) and RX-7.

The rotary engine enjoys a strong reputation in Australia, and more than 5,000 RX-8 sports coupes have been sold since launch in 2003. Over 160,000 RX-8s have been sold around the world.

The RX-8 Anniversary model features the RENESIS rotary engine, with 170 kW of power and 211 Nm of torque matched to a slick-shifting six-speed manual transmission.

This limited edition model builds on the RX-8 luxury model's already high level of specification with unique leather and Alcantara* interior, leather wrapped steering wheel, gear shifter and handbrake handle and specially-designed 40th Anniversary badging.

Handling and performance rise to another level thanks to standard fitment of Bilstein shock absorbers and urethane foam-filled front suspension cross member.

Other exclusive features of the Anniversary edition include distinctive high-gloss 18 inch alloy wheels, silver engine cover, a floating rear spoiler, sunroof and blue reflector fog-lamps. These features are in addition to the unusual pillarless door system that allows access to the interior that seats four adults.

Other standard features include a premium Bose® sound system, ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), traction control, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), cruise control, power windows and mirrors, climate control air-conditioning and 6 airbags.

It all adds up to a sports car like no other.

*Alcantara is non-woven suede made of Microfibre by Toray Industries, Inc.
