19th April, 2015

Mitsubishi Motors Australia's new 2016 Outlander has arrived locally with substantial 'mid-life' changes, marking a new era for the brand in design excellence, refinement and overall driver engagement.

The new-look 2016 Outlander has been redesigned and re-engineered from nose to tail to deliver a dynamic new appearance and significantly improved performance on the road.

Hot on the heels of its reveal at this month’s New York Motor Show, the 2016 Outlander is the first Mitsubishi production vehicle to showcase the brand’s striking new “Dynamic Shield” design concept, giving the Outlander a fresh, sophisticated on-road presence.

The Outlander’s bold new front design features a redesigned front and rear fascia, new front guards, LED Day Time Running Lights (DRL), silver roof rails, new design 18-inch alloy wheels and LED tail lights.

Its stylish yet functional interior includes a redesigned steering wheel, new accent trim, improved seating comfort and premium finishes to give the cabin a more sophisticated feel.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander delivers a smoother, more responsive on-road performance with improvements to noise levels, ride, handling and throttle response.

A new generation Continuously-Variable Transmission (CVT) offers improved acceleration, performance, shift feel and torque delivery.

The Outlander’s ride quality and comfort have been enhanced with increased structural rigidity in the body, revised suspension design, new Electric Power Steering calibration and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) throughout the vehicle.

The new Outlander retains its predecessor’s outstanding safety and environmental performance through the use of cutting-edge four-wheel drive, passive safety technology as well as fuel-efficient engine technology.

A renamed three model structure includes the entry level LS, mid-range XLS and top-of-the-range Exceed variant.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Executive Director of Marketing Tony Principe said the new-look Outlander features an unprecedented number of improvements and enhancements that will increase its overall appeal in the market.

“The new 2016 Outlander demonstrates the brand’s renewed emphasis on style, refinement and driver engagement.”

“The changes we’ve made to the Outlander are more than skin deep. The 2016 Outlander looks, drives and feels like an entirely new vehicle making it even more compelling value than before.”

“The 2016 Outlander builds on what is already a well-rounded, well-equipped package with great SUV functionality, terrific fuel economy and low running costs. Combined with Mitsubishi’s reliability and safety standards, the 2016 Outlander represents unmatched value.”

Exterior

The Outlander’s bold new front design marks the first time Mitsubishi’s new “Dynamic Shield” design concept has been applied to a production vehicle. This feature is inherited from the bumper side protection seen on generations of the Pajero, providing reassuring protection for both people and car.

Chrome and silver plated grille, silver skid plate, LED Day Time Running Lamps (DRL) and fog lamp bezel complete the front design of the 2016 Outlander.

Outlander’s new sharper rear styling features a new design bumper and silver skid plate. Chrome tailgate garnish with LED rear combination lamps and rear fog lamp compliment the front design.

Outlander’s new exterior design is unified overall through the use of body-wide chrome accents, silver roof rails and door sill garnish under the bottom edge of the front and rear doors. New look 18-inch alloy wheel design complete the modern exterior.

The top-of-the-range Exceed model gains new exterior LED headlamps.

Interior

The 2016 Outlander gets a fresh design update to the interior space incorporating stylish yet functional features.

The interior is embellished with soft touch features and premium grade materials at every contact point. A new design steering wheels features gloss black bezel and new accent trim has been applied to the doors and dashboard. New material headlining, subtle stitching highlights on the instrument panel and a soft type centre console enhance the sophisticated feel of the cabin. The top-of-the-range Exceed model gains a gloss black streamline vein instrument panel and door trim.

Seating comfort has been greatly enhanced with improved lateral support and an increase in side bolster stiffness. A new black cloth seat trim (on LS and XLS models) with stitching details complement the new interior look.

Functionality has been greatly improved with an Electro-chromatic rear view mirror (on XLS and Exceed models) and sunglasses holder (on LS and XLS models).

Performance

The 2016 Outlander boasts improved handling dynamics and greatly reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) along with increased body and structural rigidity for a quieter and superbly composed ride.

NVH improvements have been developed in part from the application of extensive sound insulation and isolation damping materials throughout the vehicle. Engine noise, cabin boom, road and wind noise are all reduced due to the modified engine air intake system (petrol and diesel engines), noise-isolating windscreen glass, improved weather stripping, new tyres, damper tuning and modified suspension mounts. In total, thirty-nine NVH improvements have been applied to the MY16 model.

The door closing sound is further improved by revising the structure of the door seals for greater sense of quality when opening and closing.

Refinement also comes in the form of manoeuvrability. Improved steering response, handling and ride feel are achieved through a more rigid suspension system, reinforced body and Electronic Power Steering calibrations. The larger diameter rear dampers allow accurate tuning to gain good straight line stability and high levels of ride comfort.

The revised Continuously-Variable Transmission (CVT) system delivers improved acceleration launch feel from a standing start as well as acceleration response across the rev range to give increased overtaking performance. Transmission shift quality, kick-down feel and downshift response are all improved, as is fuel economy from friction reduction applications and overall ratio expansion.

Safety

The 2016 Outlander range retains its five-star ANCAP safety rating thanks to its combination of active and passive safety features.

The Outlander has front driver and passenger airbags, side, curtain and knee protection airbags, reversing camera, reserving sensors and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

The Outlander’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body structure is further bolstered with active safety features including Traction Control and Active Stability Control (ASC), ABS with Electronic Break Distribution (EBD) and Hill Start Assist.

The Exceed is equipped with additional safety features including Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Mitigation.
