The British-Australian developed OPUS camper trailer has gained the approval of local camping enthusiasts in its production-ready debut at a Caravan and Camping Show in Adelaide.

With its unique, pram-like unfolding mechanism, the OPUS obtained plenty of favourable comment for its innovation, convenience and value.

OPUS has been co-developed by the British and Australian arms of RV design think tank Purple Line for both the UK’s “glamping” (glamour camping) market and Australia’s tough conditions.

Purple Line Australia director Malcolm Hill said the enthusiasm of Adelaide show patrons confirmed there was demand for a new and different form of camper trailer.

“We showed pre-production OPUS prototypes in Melbourne last year, and the production-spec units at Adelaide reflect the positive feedback we received there,” he said.

“The Australian OPUS differs from UK models in many details, particularly the chassis and running gear, and Australia’s experience with this type of RV has proved invaluable in the design process.”

“While the top half with its clever folding mechanism is a credit to the British team, the bottom half is a triumph of Australian design with its tough local componentry.”

“Built in Adelaide by the same team that co-designed it for global markets, the Australian OPUS offers two models – the lightweight Drifter and the upmarket off-road Drifter XT.”

“What all OPUS models have in common, both here and overseas, is the benefit of very clever designers who started with a blank sheet to come up with something genuinely new.”

Both the OPUS Drifter and the OPUS Drifter XT have a hot-dipped galvanised chassis and an easily erected tent structure which echoes the mechanism of a Mary Poppins-type pram.

Standard equipment on both models includes two double beds with inner privacy tents, club lounge that converts to an extra bed, tunnel boot, 12 Volt LED lighting and 240 volt power outlets, fire extinguisher and awning.

Drifter has a five-leaf suspension, override brakes, 14” alloy wheels, 50mm AL-KO coupling, wind-down AL-KO stabilisers and built-in sink with recessed tap and mains water connection.

Drifter XT upgrades include nine-leaf off-road suspension, extended drawbar, 15” alloys, electric brakes, Trigg articulated hitch, 200mm AL-KO flip-up jockey wheel and drop-down AL-KO stabiliser legs, plus 98 AH battery system, 12 volt power outlet, two-burner cooktop, 50 litre water tank and large storage box with twin jerry can holders.

Mr Hill said OPUS was ramping up production at Adelaide and would soon launch retail sales from its Melbourne sales and distribution centre.
