The President of Argentina, Mrs Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, together with Carlos Gomes, Director of Latin America for the PSA Peugeot Citroën group and Javier Varela Sobrado, Director of PSA Peugeot Citroën Argentina, have cut the ribbon on the new Peugeot 408 production line at the Buenos Aires Production Centre (Palomar).

The new model will be marketed in the coming months in Argentina and Brazil, the principal Mercosur markets, before gradual roll-out to another 25 Latin American countries. The industrial launch of the Peugeot 408 in Latin America once again highlights Peugeot's intense international activity in its bicentenary year.

With the 408, Peugeot is manufacturing another "Series 4" vehicle at Palomar following on from the highly successful 403, 404 and 405. In their era, these emblematic models represented major milestones for the Argentina car industry and helped build up the marque's prestige and image during its fifty years in the country.

With top-ranking style and quality standards, the 408 enhances the Peugeot offering on the medium-luxury vehicle segment representing one third of the Argentinean market and one quarter of the LatinAmerican market.

A highly dynamic and exclusive style

Its extremely accomplished style meets three objectives: embody the modernity of the Marque, ensure maximum safety and offer incomparable roominess. The original aim was to give it balanced proportions, simple, fluid volumes, and subtly conventional forms which are sleek. This priority guided the project's technical decisions in terms of the dimensions, wheelbase, wider track and generous wheel size.

Development of the 408 required a global effort founded on close collaboration between the various teams of the Group's R&D centres in France, China, Brazil and Argentina.

Quality at the heart of its design

This new model, which will be produced at the PSA Peugeot Citroën Production Centre in El Palomar, in Buenos Aires, benefits from the extensive experience of this industrial facility which has produced over 1.2 million vehicles to date. The 408 will have covered over one million kilometres in intensive trials in order to attain the extremely high quality standards fixed for the project so as to meet the expectations of a particularly demanding clientele.

PSA Peugeot Citroën Argentina has a workforce of 5,500 and has been the country's leading car maker for the past four years. Over half of its output is for the export market. Its production level for financial year 2010 is around 130,000 units, with this figure forecast to soar in 2011 thanks to the additional volumes from the increased production of the Peugeot 408 aimed at supplying other markets in the region.

New Lion for a high-end product in Latin America

The 408 will be the first Peugeot vehicle in Latin America to sport the new Lion presented at the start of this year on the occasion of the complete overhaul of the marque's identity.

Design of the 408 is the very embodiment of Peugeot's new "Motion & Emotion" signature in the shape of a car: a unique combination of driveability and an extremely stringent design, particularly evident in the finishing, the quality of materials and the acoustic comfort.

Its upmarket positioning is underpinned by semi-high architecture offering unmatched roominess and luminosity, together with an elegant, balanced and harmonious form.

The figure 4 relates to the car's dimensions (4.69 m) and its positioning on the segment of medium luxury family saloons. The central 0 indicates that it belongs to the Peugeot Marque while the 8 expresses the vehicle's latest generation.
