Improvements for Porsche's racing 911

19th February, 2008

Porsche GT3 RSR

Porsche has taken its racing 911 model and made it even better for 2008, with two of these exclusive hand-built race cars arriving for Australian customers soon.

The Porsche GT3 RSR – which last year scored GT2 class wins in the Le Mans 24 Hour and Nurburgring 24 Hour endurance races – has received aerodynamic upgrades for the new season, together with an optimised suspension and brand new sequential gearbox which takes its ‘know-how’ from the Porsche RS Spyderracer.

The most distinguishing external feature of the new GT3 RSR is the new front end. Aside from the easily recognisable additional spoilers on the front bumper, called ‘flicks’, optimised air ducting with newly-designed side air outlets generate more downforce and reduces drag.

The rear end including the rear wing is straight from the 2007 model; however, changes to the suspension set-up now allows more adjustability and superior grip.

The normally aspirated 3.8-litre boxer engine of the GT3 RSR remains unchanged, producing 342 kW of power at 8,000 rpm and 430 Nm of torque at 7,250 rpm. The rev-limiter kicks in at 9,400 rpm.

The expertise in the GT3 RSR’s totally new gearbox is derived from Porsche’s ALMS LMP2 championship winning car of 2007, the RS Spyder. The sequential six-speed unit, developed in-house by Porsche engineers, is considerably lighter than its predecessor. Internal friction is also substantially reduced and the flat angle of the drive shafts now allows teams a wider range of suspension set-ups.

Only 35 of these aggressive racing 911s are being produced by Porsche at its motor sport headquarters in Weissach, Germany, at an ex-factory cost of approximately AUD $600,000.

Other Porsches built in Weissach for customers include the RS Spyder, 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS, 911 GT3 Cup Car and soon-to-be-released 911 GT2.
