23rd July, 2004

Yesterday, Motor Group Australia introduced the new Rover 75 range of vehicles in this, Rover’s 100th anniversary year. Indeed, this century of experience in design and engineering is embodied in the new Rover 75 range.

The most noticeable changes have been wrought to the exterior of the car, with all-new, sharper-edged front and rear design. In particular, the front of the car features a larger and more prominent radiator grille, complemented by a new headlamp arrangement and design that features as standard fitment halogen projector units.

Inside, we’ve re-profiled the seat cushions and squabs, resulting not only in better accommodation but also in improved rear passenger entry and egress, as well as improved foot and knee clearance.

Following the theme of evolution and enhancement, other interior changes include revised instrument design, and a new “Light Oak” interior theme across the range of the lower models. The exception is the flagship Connoisseur model, which retains its traditional "Burr Walnut" finish.

Security has also been uprated, with locking wheel bolts, remote control boot release and superlocking for all four doors available as standard fitment across the range.

Engineering changes include revised, more responsive steering geometry, implemented so as to deliver an even better driving experience. This has been achieved by installing the same steering ratio to that of the Rover’s sporting cousin, the MG ZT.

The biggest news in this area is the introduction of a diesel engine to the Rover 75 range (see story).

Michel De Vriendt, Managing Director of Motor Group Australia said “We’re extremely pleased to present these enhancements of the Rover range to the Australian public. Not only have they augmented and underpinned an extremely elegant car; they have carefully retained the “Roverness” of each vehicle in the range. I’m particularly excited to be able to offer a diesel engine choice of this calibre to the Australian market.

Representing the latest in engine technology, this DOHC 4-cylinder intercooled turbocharged common rail diesel develops 96kW with an amazing 300Nm of torque at only 1900rpm, making it the most powerful diesel sedan currently available in Australia for less than $65,000. In addition to these remarkable figures, the Rover 75 Diesel is capable of less than 5.0 litres per 100km in the country driving cycle”

The new Rover 75 range also sees the option (later in 2004) of specifying an engine choice very dear to the Australian market, and one that is no stranger to Rover – a V8 engine. The 4.6 litre V8 engine also represents a change to the Rover 75, in that power is fed through the rear wheels. With other changes to the interior and exterior – most notably an especially designed radiator grille – the Rover 75 V8 is the pinnacle of the new range, delivering on over 100 years of automotive tradition and delight, and proving emphatically once more that the Rover 75 really is a car in a class of its own.
