Following the recent release of the updated Skoda Superb Sedan and Wagon, Skoda Australia has confirmed the range will feature a special edition 4x4 Outdoor Wagon variant later this year. The special edition model is powered by the 125kW TDI diesel engine coupled with a six-speed DSG transmission and an all-wheel drive drivetrain.

The new model's specification receives a number of features that distinguish it from the other Superb models.

The Superb 4x4 Outdoor receives Driver Pack (KESSY standard), which is an option on Superb Elegance models.

The most significant enhancement the Superb 4x4 Outdoor receives over the Superb Elegance Wagon is an all-wheel drive drivetrain.

The all-wheel drive in the 4x4 Outdoor Superb is based on the Haldex clutch. The Haldex clutch is an electronically actuated multi-disc clutch. In normal driving situations, the car’s drive goes mostly to the front axle, while the rear axle is uncoupled. The Haldex clutch, which operates via an electro-hydraulic oil pump, engages the rear-axle if necessary. To this end, a control unit permanently computes optimum drive power for the rear axle. This is done by assessing various parameters such as engine torque, throttle position, wheel speed and steering angle. The vehicle’s lateral and longitudinal acceleration data are also taken into account. The control unit then adjusts pressure to the clutch discs so as to apply drive power to the rear axle as determined based on the computed overall driving dynamics status. This generally prevents the wheels from spinning even during quick starts and rapid acceleration.

The Superb 4x4 Outdoor also receives a number of distinctive, practical features that enhance the appearance of the vehicle, while providing additional exterior protection during use on unsealed roads. Available in either Candy White or Moon White metallic paint colours, the Superb 4x4 Outdoor’s exterior is heightened by a contrasting protective front and rear bumper in two-tone black and silver, dark covers on the front and rear wheel arches, a protective strip on the loading edge of the boot and protective door sill covers and side moulding strips. Eighteen-inch ‘Trinity’ anthracite alloy wheels complete the 4x4 Outdoor’s rugged exterior look, while a unique Alcantara/leather-appointed upholstery on the bolstered seats continue the tough look and feel into the cabin.
