Subaru’s first rear-wheel drive sports car, the BRZ is now on-sale locally. With just a small allocation of stock coming to Australia, sports car enthusiasts will be looking at a delivery date in 2013 for new orders as the 2012 allocation of 201 cars has already been sold.

The Subaru BRZ is an economical alternative for enthusiastic drivers.

Subaru is offering the BRZ at a Drive-Away Price** that will include free scheduled servicing for the first three years/60,000 kilometres** of ownership.

The national Drive-Away Prices** are:
BRZ six speed manual - $37,150**
BRZ six-speed automatic - $39,730**

Because BRZ supply is limited at the present time, Subaru has decided to sell the BRZ on-line, via their web site.

The new BRZ sports car is a one-off departure from Subaru’s long-established policy of offering only Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive on models that come to Australia.

BRZ is built exclusively at Subaru’s Gunma Main Plant in Japan, as is the Toyota 86 both being the result of a collaborative agreement between the two respected brands.

The new generation Subaru FA 2.0 litre four-cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer engine is designed specifically for the model and is mounted as low as possible, producing agility and a thrilling, nimble drive.

BRZ’s low Centre of Gravity (CoG) combines with light weight and compact size to provide one of the most entertaining drives of any new Subaru.

Contrasting with conventional direct injection engines, the 'FA' offers perfectly balanced high output, fuel efficiency and eco-friendly performance.

It combines the D-4S injection system with the dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS), for superb linear power delivery from low revs, underlined by the sporty engine sound.

BRZ features new 17-inch alloy wheels, designed for light weight, rigidity and braking performance.

Its suspension set-up is unique to the model - specifically tuned to provide handling excellence, inspiring driver confidence with high grip levels and stability.

Subaru claim the BRZ offers good ride comfort and low levels of impact harshness, while maintaining sharp steering response, impressive levels of mid-corner stability and excellent dynamic balance due to the low CoG, inherent in the design of Subaru’s Boxer engine.

EXTERIOR

BRZ’s on-road presence is reflected in its wide and low stance, underlined by the 'muscular' flared wheel arches, combined with the compact cabin.

It sits just 1,245 mm tall, with a minimum ground clearance of 130 mm and length of 4,240 mm, highlighting the sporty stance. Its wheelbase of just 2,570 mm and width of 1,775 mm adds to its on-road presence and handling.

BRZ’s short front and rear overhangs serve the dual purpose of aiding visual appeal while contributing to aerodynamic performance.

The new sports car features Subaru’s signature hexagonal grille, the size of which reduces air intake resistance and maximises cooling.

LED driving lights (DRLs) are integrated into the fog lamp housing – the first time LED DRLs have been used in a Subaru.

BRZ features projector HID headlights, with washers integrated into the bumper.

The “nose cone” front bumper adopts a highly rigid design that reduces weight.

Windscreen wipers are positioned under the bonnet edge for a cleaner, uncluttered look, while lessening wind noise.

Frameless front door windows enhance BRZ’s low profile look. Inside the doors is a high-strength rolled beam made of 1.270 Mpa high-tensile sheet steel.

The large aerodynamic rear diffuser integrates with the dual exhaust outlets.

BRZ’s 17-inch wheels feature extremely slim spokes and a distinctive Subaru-logo hub, offering high rigidity and light weight. Twin spokes with a bright-cutting finish enhance the appearance.

The tail and brake lights use 12 LEDs each, with the external designs also helping airflow.

Reverse lights and a rear foglight are installed in the base of the bumper.

Large exhaust pipe baffles underline BRZ’s sporty character.

BRZ’s rear windscreen features tempered glass with a thickness of just 2.8 mm, reducing weight.

The rear field of vision was made as wide as possible to meet Subaru’s requirement for the driver to be able to see a one-metre tall pole from the seat.

COLOURS

BRZ is available with the choice of seven colours:

  • WR Blue Mica
  • Crystal Black Silica
  • Lightning Red
  • Satin White Pearl
  • Dark Gray Metallic
  • Galaxy Blue Silica
  • Sterling Silver Metallic

INTERIOR

The driver’s seating position in BRZ is low and close to the CoG – signalling the car’s seriously sporty ability.

This means the driver can easily sense the vehicle’s handling behaviour.

BRZ has a completely round small diameter steering wheel (365 mm). No switches are mounted on it. A lever switch operates cruise control.

The tachometer and digital speedometer are positioned in the centre of the instrument cluster, offering instant readability and easy monitoring on the move.

As with the WRX STI, the Rev and Red Zone indicator helps the driver enjoy sporty driving. The Rev indicator allows the driver to set any number of revolutions and also set a buzzer to sound as the Rev indicator flashes.

Push-button start adds to the sporty ambience.

Sport front seats offer firm support, while the seat backs were made as thin as possible to reduce weight and provide leg space for rear seat occupants.

There is also the option of leather and Alcantara, with heated front seat.

Red stitching together with metallic-type accents add to BRZ’s sporty cabin look.

A guide/holder is provided in the shoulder of the front seats, making it easier to either put on or take off the seatbelt.

A compact heating, ventilation and air conditioning system fits the centre instrument panel shape. The heater and blower are integrated into a single unit, reducing size and weight.

BRZ offers four drink holders – two cup holders inside the console box and one plastic bottle holder in each door.

BRZ’s brake pedal has a return spring - producing a hard feeling and easy control.

The rear seat can be folded flat to increase cargo capacity - normally 217 litres with the seat upright.

The lightweight plastic underfloor fuel tank also enables more efficient space use.

AUDIO

BRZ’s audio system features an AM/FM tuner, single CD, AUX and USB connectivity, with six speakers, including 160 mm front door speakers and 65 mm rear quarter speakers, delivering wide and spacious sound.

It has a roof-mounted pole antenna.
