The new flagship Golf model, the Golf R, has been launched. The R replaces the outgoing R32.

Aside from the styling changes from the outgong series, the big change is the reduction in engine capacity from a 3.2 litre 6 cylinder engine to the new 2 litre 4 cylinder direct injection turbo charged engine. The new engine has increased power and produces 197kw whilst also achieving reduced fuel consumption.

The increase in power helps propel the Golf R from 0-100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds when equipped with the optional direct shift gearbox or 5.7 seconds with the standard 6 speed manual gearbox.

The fuel economy improves from 10.7 litres per 100kms to 8.5 litres per 100kms. Accordingly, the CO2 emissions are reduced from 255 to 199g/km.
