Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Van Released Locally

20th April, 2008

Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Van

The Volkswagen Caddy Van is now even bigger . . .

Size that counts

Following on from the success of the Caddy Van, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is now offering a new class of vehicle - the Caddy Maxi Van.

Incorporating all of the impressive features of the short wheel base Caddy Van, the Caddy Maxi Van gains an impressive 47 cm of increased length.

Cargo volume has increased from 3.2m3 to 4.2m3 - a massive 31% increase or in other words, one additional cubic metre.

Loads of space

Compared to the Caddy Van, the Max Van has been stretched from 4.41 metres to 4.88 metres. This has provided an amazingly spacious vehicle with up to 4,200 litres of stowage volume, making the Caddy Maxi Van one of the largest models among the compact vans and small transporters available.

Load capacity up to 4.2 m3, an 810 kilogramme payload, up to 1,500 kilogramme trailer load and load area up to 2,250 millimetres long, depending on the interior configuration – each being a record figure in this segment.

The Caddy Maxi Van was designed for all tradesmen, courier services and service providers requiring a very high load capacity in a compact van. It is longer than its smaller 'brother' by 47 centimetres – an extended wheelbase by 32 cm and an extended rear overhang by 15 cm.

The maximum roof load is 100 kilogrammes and depending on the engine, the Caddy Maxi Van can also tow trailers of up to 1,500 kilogrammes in weight.

Keeping the comfort

A major factor in the great success of the Caddy Van is its functional and comfortable design. For this reason, the interior concept has been passed on, unchanged into the Caddy Maxi Van. The high quality seats and cockpit area are also identical. The driver and front passenger are still able to enjoy outstanding comfort and generous space.

Among the standard equipment are dual sliding doors, driver and front passenger airbags, Semi automatic ‘Climatic’ air conditioning, height adjustable driver and front passenger seats and heat reflective glass. For an optimal view of the instrument panel and for safe handling, the steering wheel can also be adjusted in height and rake as standard. Cruise control is standard on all TDI models.

In addition, the Caddy Maxi Van impresses with a cleverly designed storage concept. A large roof gallery above the windscreen offers additional room for storage. More compartments and cup holders can be found in the centre console and in the door trim panels. In the front doors it is even possible to store 1.5 litre bottles without them tipping over.

Plenty of space, plenty of power

The Caddy Maxi Van is available with two engine options. The 1.6L petrol engine returns 75 kW of power. Its maximum engine torque is 148 Newton metres (from 3,800 rpm). The diesel world is covered, as before, by the popular and proven 1.9 TDI with 77 kW, which accelerates the Caddy Maxi Van to 100 km/h in 13.3 seconds.

The diesel engine features unit injector or “pumpe düse” technology. Optimal utilisation of the fuel quantity is assured through this direct injection, significantly improving consumption and reducing emissions. This power plant is closely related to the very same brilliantly performing 1.9L TDI that is fitted to the Golf, which also develops 77 kW at 4,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,900 rpm. The 1.9L TDI meets the stringent EU IV emissions standard whilst maintaining a fuel consumption of 6.1L/100km with the 5-speed manual and 6.7L/100km with the optional 6-speed DSG (according to ADR 81/01).

The combination of performance and lower fuel consumption also applies to the petrol engine. The petrol engine is also related to the Golf 1.6L and develops 75 kW at 5,600 rpm and 148 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm. The 1.6L also meets the EU IV emission requirements whilst maintaining a fuel consumption of 8.2L/100km (according to ADR 81/01).

The 1.9L TDI is matched to the 5 speed manual transmission or the optional 6 speed DSG transmission. The 1.6L engine is fitted with a 5 speed manual transmission.

Delivering everyone and everything, safely

The Caddy Maxi Van is controlled in critical situations by regulating systems such as ABS, TCS (traction control system) and EBC (engine braking control). They intervene in the braking and engine management system in a targeted manner when necessary. As an option, the ESP (electronic stabilisation programme) can be ordered with a brake assist system and trailer stabilisation (when chosen with a tow hitch).

Strong Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle Sales

It was a strong sales year for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in 2007 with solid growth in Australia and worldwide.

In total 4,733 Commercial Vehicles and People Movers were delivered by Volkswagen Group Australia. Volkswagen recorded a 14.1% increase over the prior year in the Light Commercial Vehicle segment, while both the Caddy and Transporter products achieved a combined 15.1% share in the van market segment. In the Heavy Commercial vehicle segment the Volkswagen LT/Crafter models also achieved good results, with a combined 25.7% increase over the prior year.

All models throughout the LCV range performed well with the Transporter +14.5% and Caddy +13.6%, both recording strong increases over the prior year. The Transporter continues to be Volkswagen Commercial’s best selling model with 1,714 delivered last year with a share of 8.4%.

On a global scale, the brand Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles once again strongly increased both its deliveries worldwide and its leading market position.

World wide deliveries by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to customers in 2007 rose by 10.7% to 488,700 unit sales, compared to 441,500 in 2006.

Importantly, the very successful VW Caddy van continues.

Later this year, Volkswagen will release the Caddy Life Maxi in Australia.
