What's boxy, small but roomy and peppy in the performance department? The answer is the new Toyota Rukus.

This 2.4 litre, 4-cylinder petrol-fuelled trendy box on wheels follows in the mould of other lifestyle trend-setters such as the Kia Soul and the Chrysler PT Cruiser amongst others of course.

The major feature of the Rukus is its unconventional styling. One thing about the Rukus is the very evident inability to mistake it for anything else on the road today. Owners won't be worried about losing their car, well, not with a Rukus because you can pick it anywhere.

Sitting inside a Rukus is a novelty too. The interior is very airy with the windscreen positioned well forward of the front seat occupants.

Three versions of the Rukus are available locally. With model names such as Build 1, Build 2 and Build 3 it seems Toyota have chosen to keep it simple.

On the road, the front-wheel drive, automatic transmission vehicle has a satisfying level of performance. Mechanically it is quite conventional. And, as indicated, the styling is anything but conventional. And it is the styling that will determine whether the new Toyota Rukus is for you or best left for some-one else.

Pricing on a Manufacturer's List Price basis for this new model begins from under $28,000.

Stay tuned for news on another retro-styled vehicle from Toyota, when next year the FJ Cruiser comes to Australia.
