Whilst the trend to increasing SUV sales continues across the nation, Mitsubishi have ensured buyers maintain a high level of interest in this segment by expanding their line-up with a new smaller SUV. The Mitsubishi ASX is amongst a growing number of compact SUVs. In a sense, these non-city style vehicles have been made city-friendly with compact external dimensions, friendly interiors and, importantly, the option of just front-wheel drive. In the past, the typical SUV featured all-wheel drive. But the expanding appeal of SUVs has opened a niche for front-wheel drive variants. And this makes sense in a city and urban environment.

Mitsubishi's newest SUV has a great deal of appeal. Power is available from a 2 litre petrol engine (with manual or automatic transmission) or a 1.8 litre diesel matched to a manual transmission. Two trim levels are available, a base model and the top-of-the-line Aspire. Next Car has sampled three Aspire models, both petrol and diesel variants. Our preference is for the petrol automatic.

Our drive experience has centred around Melbourne firstly with a petrol automatic Aspire, then an occasion around Sydney and Newcastle with an Aspire diesel/manual. Additionally, we have had an Aspire petrol/automatic for a long distance run from Sydney to Melbourne and return.

Our experience tells us that the little Mitsubishi ASX is very suitable for the city and urban environment where the good performance, compact dimensions, interior lay-out and its stylish presence makes for an attractive package. Long distance driving wasn't as comfortable as it should be, as the front seat bases lacked support.

The ASX is intended as a city centric type of car and in this role, Mitsubishi have excelled in the presentation of their new SUV. By the way it is just 4.3 metres long. Prices (excluding the traditional on-road costs) commence at $25,990 for the base model petrol/manual, whilst the Aspire variants are from $36,990.

And one final appeal for the Mitsubishi ASX is the choice of whether you take a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It is available with both.
