Ford Turns the Escape into a Bad Boy

Ford has made June a great month to plan an escape with the release of two new Escape 4WD models to help you get there.

The already extensive ZB Escape 4WD range has been further bolstered with the release of the special edition Escape XLS 2.3L Bad Boy Pack and the introduction of a second four-cylinder model, the Escape XLT 2.3L.

The Bad Boy Pack enhances the Escape's already tough image by offering customers a host of extra features, valued at over $3,000, for no additional cost over the recommended retail price of a standard Escape XLS 2.3L of $31,990*.

Included in the Bad Boy Pack is a range of seriously tough and stylish extras, from the front and rear skid plates, side steps and 16" alloy wheels, to the chrome-look bumper inserts, chrome-look side mirror covers and 'Escape' branded stainless steel scuff plates.

A tough act to beat, the Bad Boy Pack will be available at Ford dealerships from June 1.

"The Compact SUV segment is certainly booming at moment," said Escape Brand Manager Anthony Ficarra.

"Sales in this segment exceeded 75,000 units in 2003, with 80 per cent of those sales coming from four-cylinder models.

"Escape sales are up almost 20 per cent on year-to-date figures compared with last year, and with the local industry heading towards an all-time sales record this trend looks set to continue throughout 2004."

While the Bad Boy Pack is sure to have the neighbours talking, the new Escape XLT 2.3L gives customers a second four-cylinder Escape option that delivers a higher level of standard equipment.

Based on the Escape XLT V6, the new Escape XLT 2.3L picks up many of the features of its stablemate, including accent colour painted bumpers, bodyside cladding and wheel arches in Exceed Silver or Moonlight Grey, as well as newly styled 16" alloy wheels shod with 215/70 R16 tyres and a power antenna.

Inside, the XLT 2.3L is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an overhead console containing sunglasses holder and reading lamps. The dashboard has a two-tone finish with the top half in black and the lower half in either Pebble or Flint trim, while the centre instrument panel and power window switch surrounds have a black finish.

The Escape XLT 2.3L uses the same engine as the entry-level Escape XLS 2.3L introduced in January this year. It produces a healthy 108kW at 6000rpm and 201Nm of torque at 4500rpm.

Escape XLT 2.3L also features a mechanical brake assist system, previously only available on the Escape XLS 2.3L, which acts to minimise stopping distances in an emergency braking situation by supplementing the driver's pedal effort.

"The release of the four-cylinder Escape XLT serves to further strengthen Ford's already extensive Escape 4WD product line-up," Ficarra said

"The introduction of the XLT 2.3L sees the Escape range expand to five ongoing models, offering customers a choice of three specification levels and two drivetrain combinations.

"The Escape XLT 2.3L is perfect for customers looking for a stylish vehicle without needing the extra power of a V6."

On sale from June 1, 2004, the recommended retail price for the Escape XLT 2.3L is $35,990*.
