In a first for an Australian car manufacturer, GM Holden yesterday announced it would begin applying an "E10 suitable" label to its imported petrol-engined vehicles from 1st July, 2006.

The label assures new Holden petrol-engined vehicle owners they can use fuel blended with up to 10 per cent ethanol without causing damage or voiding warranty rights.

The announcement follows a commitment by Australia's four domestic manufacturers to label all locally-made petrol-engined vehicles from January 2006.

GM Holden imports the Barina, Viva, Astra, Combo, Tigra and Rodeo models from GM partners. The black and yellow label is designed to be displayed near vehicles' fuel caps to remind vehicle owners of their Holden's E10 compatibility at the petrol bowser.

Holden's decision to include its petrol-enginesd imported vehicle range supports the national target to achieve 350 megalitres of biofuels consumption by 2010.

GM Holden Executive Director of Engineering, Tony Hyde, said the new labelling programme is reflective of Holden's effort to raise awareness and use of E10.

"GM Holden supports efforts to increase the use of E10 petrol, so this is a very simple but effective way to demonstrate that support," Mr Hyde said.

"Certainly, in the short term, a concerted effort will be required to increase the uptake and consumer awareness of E10."

"It is important that consumers are fully aware of the suitability of ethanol for their vehicle. We support efforts to educate consumers so they can make informed choices about ethanol. These labels are an important tool in helping us achieve that goal."

Most Holden vehicles are E10 capable, with the exception of a small number of older models not designed for ethanol compatibility.

The Next Car team understands post 1986 Holdens are E10 compatible, except for the following models: Apollo (1/87-7/89), Nova (2/89-7/94), Barina (1985-1994), Drover (1985-1987), Scurry (1985-1986), Astra (1984-1989)

We understand Daewoo branded models are not suitable for E10 use.
