30th May, 2006

Porsche AG has announced first details of the new 911 GT3 RS, the latest addition to the 997 series of the famed 911. The GT3 RS follows on from the recent global 911 reveals of the GT3 and Turbo models.

The GT3 RS promises to provide the most “race car-like” experience of the three high-horsepower 911 models when it goes on sale in Australia in 2007 priced at $299,900.

Although the GT3 and GT3 RS models share the same normally aspirated 3.6-litre engine developing a maximum 305 kW of power at 7,600 rpm, the RS variant offers superior performance. The GT3 RS weighs 20 kg less and features a close-ratio six speed transmission with a single-mass flywheel. This enables the GT3 RS to rev more freely and sprint from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds – one tenth of a second quicker than the GT3 – and hit 200 km/h in just 13.3 seconds on its way to a 310 km/h top speed.

“The GT3 RS is a showcase of Porsche 911 race car technology made legal for the road,” says Porsche Cars Australia Managing Director, Michael Winkler.

This latest addition to the 911 range is a very serious car for very experienced drivers. “Although the GT3 RS may be driven legally on Australian roads, it will deliver the kind of thrills and performance that are best sampled on a race track with only the most experienced drivers able to explore its potential.”

One characteristic of the new GT3 RS is the body, which is 44 mm wider at the rear (courtesy of the Carrera 4 models) by comparison with the 911 GT3. The muscular rear end conceals a wider track that not only improves directional stability but also increases the transverse acceleration potential of this extreme two-seater coupe.

The GT3 RS comes ready for the race track: the standard “Club Sport” package features integrated rollcage, carbon-fibre race seats, six-point driver’s harness, fire extinguisher and battery separation switch.

Despite these added features, the GT3 RS is 20 kg lighter than the GT3, weighing in at just 1375 kg. This weight-saving is achieved through a number of ways, including the use of an adjustable carbon-fibre rear wing, the use of a plastic rear lid and a lightweight plastic rear window.

The GT3 RS also has carbon-fibre body components and entire wheel carrier and split wishbones on the rear axle to ensure it meets important Gran Turismo (GT) racing regulations.

Available standard exterior colours are Silver and Black; with Orange and Green as optional colours. All decals and badges are finished in Orange or Black to contrast with the body colour; with wheels available in Black or Silver.

The limited run of GT3 RS models for Australia will be built at Porsche AG’s racing headquarters in Weissach, Germany, in the first quarter of 2007; with local deliveries expected during the second quarter.
