Smart's Tower in Sydney

29th June, 2006

When the team assembling the Smart stacker had finished moving it into Henry Dean Plaza in Sydney last week, it was cause for celebration.

The day marked the tower’s 21st move, incorporating locations across Australia.

From the first installation at the QV Centre in Melbourne in 2004, the stacker has captured the public’s attention and intrigued them as to how it was possible to erect a 12-metre, six-car-high structure literally overnight.

The 12 metre high, 10-tonne galvanised steel sculpture can be set up or dismantled within two hours and consists of an amazing vertical stack of six Smart Fort Wo coupés (the only Smart model available now, as all other models have been dropped from the Smart line-up), towering towards the sky.

The Smart stacker concept is an Australian take on the towers of European Smart dealerships.

“Smart is a design brand which has been celebrated by institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Smart tower communicates the Smart design philosophy very simply”, said Sam Tabart, senior manager Smart.

In its 21 appearances, the Smart stacker has been the focal point of city festivals, motor shows, made heads swivel at airports and on roundabouts and has even evolved to become an eight-car ‘super stacker’ at the Mercedes-Benz of Melbourne dealership.

By bringing the cars to the customer, the Smart tower has tipped traditional marketing practices upside down and consequently, sales have risen almost as quickly as the towers. Although, with Smart facing profitability problems, the new Smart Fort Wo for 2007 will determine the future of the tall and tiny cars from Mercedes-Benz more so than any tower.
